The problem
For the past several weeks I have noticed that Friday is the day that people make recommendations for people you should follow on twitter.
Others have noticed this behavior as well. Read: Twitter #FollowFriday – Give Us a Reason
Unfortunately this has morphed into an excuse for people to recommend following lots of others for no reason whatsoever.
We see tweets recommending that we follow five or maybe even 10 people without any reason.
What I recommend
So what I recommend is that we pick one person each Friday to recommend that others follow. And we spend the remaining 140 characters explaining why that person should be followed. We should give a reason.
You could even make a blog post if you don’t feel 140 characters is enough to explain what this person did for you and why they should be followed.
And instead of using #FollowFriday we can use #SingleFollowFriday
So who is with me?

Most people who use FollowFriday tweet more than 1 person because they've already determined that the people they are recommending other people follow are worthwhile following. So, if I get a multiple named #FF then it is up to me to follow through and indeed figure out if these people are worth following myself.
Now autofollowing is another matter. Where multiple #FF's need an action on your part, autofollowing seems to be mostly used by people who want to grow their followers for some other motive – i.e. – selling them something.
I understand what you're saying. But if someone suggests that I follow someone else then I expect them to supply a reason if they want me to take their suggestions seriously. When people suggest that I follow 10 random users I just ignore them.
