6 steps to write a good “About Me” page

Why you need to have an “About Me” page

It’s important that you have an “About Me” as it is one of the first pages that many visitors will look at.

Many of your readers will get their first impression of you and your website from your “About Me” page. If you have a good one then first-time readers are much more likely to return and read again.

And getting traffic from return visitors is one of the easiest ways to get traffic.

1. State who you are and your goals for the website

It’s a good idea to state your name and your purpose for creating the website. This is especially good to do if you’re trying to teach people about something or if you’re supporting some worthy cause.

The goal of my blog is to help people learn how to get traffic to their website and so I stated this at the top of my about page:

2. List your contact

You should list a way for people to contact you. I like to just put my e-mail address but others prefer contact forms or more private means of communication.

There have been times when there was a problem with my website and I found out about it because one of my readers e-mailed me about the problem. The reader had found my e-mail address on my blog and I was grateful that I had listed it there.

3. Show people how to stay up to date

Many people are interested in getting updates from your blog. Your “About Me” is the perfect place to show people how they can stay up to date.

On my “About Me” page I list my twitter account and my RSS feed. If you use other types of social media you should list those as well.

People who stay up to date are more likely to visit your site again.

4. Keep it short and to the point

You definitely want to keep the page short and to the point. Most readers are not interested in your full life story.

They want to know that you’re a real person and what you can do for them.

5. Post a picture

I believe posting a picture is one of the best ways of building trust and showing your readers that you are a real person.

Some people don’t want to post a picture on every page of their blog and that’s understandable. But I highly recommend you do post a picture of yourself on your “About Me” page.

6. Maintain some degree of privacy

It’s important to maintain some degree of privacy. I give out my e-mail address for people to contact me on my blog. One of the nice things about e-mail is that I can check on my own schedule.

However, I don’t give out my personal phone number or my home address. I don’t want to receive phone calls from people I don’t know the middle of the night and I don’t want strangers showing up at my house.

What are your thoughts?

I would love to hear what you think so please leave a comment below.

I am just a beginner. I don't have a website, yet. I am working on building a website web page; and I'm just now beginning to write a blog to help me as well as help others. This website is what I came across in a google search I did in how to write a good "About Me" page. This site was so helpful to me as well. Thank you so much. The timing and the info was perfect for me as well.

The thing with privacy can be seen from several sides:

some countries require that you show who is responsible for the site and the content – all data like full name, street address, phone, email mandatory.

Other countries don't have these requirements and you just can say something like the standard wordpress about blabla.

Nick. Thanks. All these tips are good when you are running a private blog.

What if it's a website you are trying to promote where the owner is not important but the company he/she represents is.

I think the same rules still apply. State with the company's purposes and how they're different and better than any other company. You should also list contact information and different ways for people to stay up-to-date.

cool. I think I will need to do some work on the website and see how it goes before I comment anything on this matter.

The best way to have someone contact us would be thru our email address. It's dangerous giving out out telephone number and address on the net as just about anyone has aceess to it.

Posting photos/pics of yours is a real way to catch up your visitors…but does it not intrude your privacy? Especially for girlies….. :-)

Don't post pictures or photos that you do not want the world to see. It's that simple.

Great information for your "about me" page. You would think writing about yourself would be easy but I guess not. Of course doing a quick Google search and finding this blog has given me a few extra tips to complete my about me page..
