1 Simple Site Makes Me $100 A Month
Today I am going to give away one of my secrets. This particular site makes me around $100 a month and required very little effort to create. When I say little effort I mean just a couple hours.
This website is: http://stophairbreakage.org
Search Engine Rankings
Right now I have the number one and two positions on Google for the phrase Stop Hair Breakage.

The process that I went through
Here is the exact process I went through.
- Keyword research
- Advertising check
- Content availability
- Find a good domain
- Build a simple site
- Basic linking and promotion
Keyword research
The first step I take is to find some potential keywords and then evaluate the competition.
Google offers a fabulous free tool for finding potentially good keywords. You can check it out here.
I typically like keyword phrases that have three or more words in them. The phrase “stop hair breakage” has three words in it. The reason I like to go for phrases with more words is that there is typically less competition for that phrase.
Once I have found a good keyword phrase using the Google tool I will do a little bit of competition analysis.
First I will go to Google and search for: stop hair breakage
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=stop+hair+breakage&aq=0&oq=stop+hair+br&aqi=g4g-m6
Looking at the search results I can see that there are 75,300 websites competing for this phrase.
Next I will go to Google and search for: “stop hair breakage”
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=”stop+hair+breakage”&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g2g-m2
Looking at the search results there appear to be over a million competing sites. This seems a little off considering the previous search results.
Now I’m going to search Google and see how many people have the the words stop hair breakage in their title
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=allintitle:stop+hair+breakage&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
There are only 1,480 sites that have these words in their title. This is a low score and it looks very good.
Now I am going to search google and see how many people have the words stop hair breakage in their URL
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=allinurl:stop+hair+breakage&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
Only 373 websites have these words in their URL. I can definitely compete with that!
Advertising check
Initially I plan to use Google AdSense for my advertising. So it’s important to know if there are many ads for these particular keywords.
Going to Google I do a search for stop hair breakage and count how many Google advertisements I see over on the right hand side. The more ads I see the more people are competing for this particular keyword. More competition means that I make more money per click with Google AdSense.
I decide that the advertising is sufficient for the keywords: stop hair breakage
Content availability
Next I need to worry about how I’m going to build content for the website I am thinking of building around the keyword phrase stop hair breakage.
One of my favorite ways to get content fast is to go to Ezine Articles. I did a quick search on Ezine Articles for my phrase stop hair breakage and I find that there are a few articles available with my keyword phrase in the title and body. There aren’t as many articles as I would like ideally but that’s okay.
Find a good domain
The next step is to find a good domain. Ideally you want to find a domain with your keyword phrase in it and have it be a “.com” or a “.org”.
I also recommend avoiding “.info” domains as they are frequently used by spammers and sometimes take longer to rank in the search engines.
I quickly discovered that the domain stophairbreakage.org was available.
It was at this point I decided to take the plunge and buy the domain. Up until this point I was only doing research. But the keyword research, advertising, and content on ezine articles looked good. And I found the ideal domain.
Build a simple site
To build this site I am going to use WordPress. WordPress has numerous advantages including:
- search engine optimization is super easy
- adding new content is a snap
- you do not need to know any HTML
- there are many plug-ins that will help you add advertising to your website
- There are numerous web hosts that allow you to install WordPress with the click of a button
For my website stophairbreakage.org I paid someone a small amount of money to add content copied from Ezine Articles.
I also put my AdSense ad front and center where people were most likely to click on the ads.

Basic linking and promotion
Many people think that this is the hardest part but frequently it’s quite easy. Because there is so little competition I don’t have to get very many incoming links to get my website to rank high.
And that’s exactly what I did for stophairbreakage.org.

Great job again, Nick. The way you’re dominating your keyword phrase, I see you making more than $100 a month from this site in no time.
Listen to Nick’s advice, folks. You’ll be glad you did.
I could make more if I got off adsense and found a good product.
Yeah, Nick really helped me in getting backlinks fast like commenting on blogs with top commentators plugin. I never had an idea about that until I visited this site.
Thanks Again Nick!
I’m glad to help. Feel free to ask me any traffic questions.
Hi… Nick,
Excellent post. Very informative and helpful indeed.
Thank you.

Ok, I have got to start working smarter not harder Nick. There are so many ways to work hard and make nothing, believe me, I know. I need to follow your lead, get off squidoo, and build some ‘real’ sites. Maybe put that adsense account to some good use.
Thanks for the great post!
That’s the ticket Jen- smarter not harder.
Nick,
You have laid this post out so clear and simple. Thanks for the post.
I am looking forward to the day that I can do all this in just a couple of hours.
Jackie
Good luck to you. It takes some practice but you get better as you go.
Nick, thanks for the great post. Ezine Articles is a good place to look for content but consider writing some or outsourcing your own content as well. It is important to “mix up ” your site content a little, just in case there is some credibility to duplicate content.
Jen, don’t give up on Squidoo entirely…
Use it to drive traffic to your blog or site.
Scott
I haven’t given up on squidoo entirely yet. But it’s lower on my list these days.
Great job Nick! Love your post always !!!! Keep posting things like this. We are bookmarking this and forwarding it to our fans…
Do you recommend a certain wordpress theme?
I use thesis but it’s not free. There are a ton of good ones out there and most are free.
I suggest trying out several and see what works best for you.
Thanks again Nick for answering. I have thesis! I see you are using serif fonts for this which is why I could not catch it the first time around.
One problem i seem to have is skip over the research part. I then spend alot of time on everything else and my results end up botched =/ I’m getting a little bit better at it but I always seem to end up in competitive niches with competitive keywords. I just begin to doubt myself. Anyways that’s awesome how you did that with little work. I’m still in the learning phase with lots of investment and little to no return.
Research is so important. You’ll notice the first 4 steps are nothing but research:
# Keyword research
# Advertising check
# Content availability
# Find a good domain
Make sure all 4 checkout before buying a domain and building a site.
Hi Nick
A great post from somebody that is not just talking the talking but as we can now see is walking the walk.
Thanks Sean.
we had our adsense account suspended and we have not responded for a month. in our investigation we found out that some family friend members may have intentionally clicked on same ads. How do you communicate that to google to get your account reinstated?
I don’t know offhand. I make it a point to never click on my ads and I never tell any family/friends about my adsense sites for this very reason.
Very nice article..I like your blog…But I have 2 questions:
1)I see that u created the website in 2007..Did it take so long to rank??
2)There are around 10,000 backlinks..May I know the strategy used??
My traffic tricks blog has ranked for some terms for quite awhile but I am not overly concerned with search engine rankings. Most of my traffic comes from social media and my email list.
10,000 links… I linked to it from a couple of my sites that have a ton of pages,
Nick,
I am talking abt your stophairbreakage website…How much time did it take to get onto the first page..Also could you give us some backlinking, bookmarking strategy that u used
Sorry my mistake.
I didn’t do everything right at first and so it took a month or so to get it to rank and start getting traffic.
If I had been smart I would have worked harder on getting backlinks faster. I have outlined how to do this in a couple posts:

Nick,
i was asking abt ur stophairbreakage.org
1)I see that u created the website in 2007..Did it take so long to rank??
2)There are around 10,000 backlinks..May I know the strategy used??
The links are from different backlinking strategies.
First I have a few websites that I use to link to stophairbreakage.org
Next I submitted several of the posts onlywire. Learn more:

I also worked on getting backlinks:

I think I did some reciprocal linking too:

Thanks Nick…Your blog is one of the few quality IM/Traffic blogs
Hi Nick
Thanks for sharing your tips. Your tips inspire me to do the same.
How long to see the result?
Is the income only from adsense?
My income is only from AdSense. It took a month to see some results and 2 more months to see the full results.
hmm.. so it’s totally 3 months…
Did you put adsense from the first installment or you wait some traffics then you put the adsense?
Are the traffics steady month after month? and how about the income? does it generate $xxx constantly per month?
I put AdSense on right away. The traffic is pretty steady. The income is pretty steady.
Do you update the content everyday?
I don’t update the content more than once a month.
Well it is a great way to make some money. But it is hard to do and not for some newbie. I think you should start a blog first before trying stuff like this.
So I guess myfamousquotes.com is one of your sites?
Hi Nick,
I enjoyed visiting your blog. It is full of good and
informative info but there is one major thing you
left out. You did not tell what you were selling
and where you got the product from. Was it an ebook
and did you find it on clickbank,or was it your own
product?
I only make money from Google AdSense.
I am new to the internet business. I “Have” tried to set up a web site. It has been a year with no results. The company that took me for a ride, (OVER $5000.00) gave me templates but no info. on what to do with them. They were suppose to be a coaching & training support company. They said nothing about nitches , addwords , auto respoders … I have sense closed the web site. I need something to get money coming in to support an online business. I’ve maxed my cards trying to make money with this other web builder. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. By the way I enjoyed your ” traffic tricks” email. Thanks!!
I am so sorry to hear that that company took you for a ride. There are a lot of scams out there and you have to be careful.
You can build your own website for free using blogger and start promoting affiliate products or run AdSense advertising.
I have to warn you that it’s a long road in your first $10 is probably the hardest to earn. Once you’ve done that making your next $10 is quite a bit easier.
Without knowing more about you and your skills and talents it’s hard to give specific advice.
Everyone could be find a lot of great comments and suggestions at http://nickstraffictricks.com.
Many thanks!

Nick
Did you use PPC advertising at the beginning to get traffic? If you did at what point did you decide you didn’t need it any more?
I never used PPC for this site.
Nice article with some good tips. I just have a question, will it be better to find a 3 word phrase that is popular or should i find something that is not used to much and make that popular.
Either will work if you provide good content.
Ok, thank you for your advice
Is the theme for stophairbreakage.org “Thesis”? Can you customize it that much?
Hi Nick,
Thanks for sharing this, this is very valuable information.
I’m a bit confused about using ezine articles for content. Is it ok to copy content from there as long as the author’s byline is included? Also how does duplicate content factor in here?
Chris
Yes that’s the whole point of Ezine Articles.
I don’t worry too much about duplicate content as long as there isn’t a lot of competition.
Nick,
What are your hard and fast cutoffs for keywords worth competing over? How would you rank the 4 research steps in order of importance?
Thanks.
Sebastian
I don’t really have any hard and fast cut offs for competition. What I do is pick a niche and generate whole bunch of keywords for that niche. I then do a competition analysis for each one and pick the best one or two keywords.
Sometimes none of the keywords are very good; all of them just have too much competition.
Also, as time goes on you get more and more comfortable with dealing with increasing levels of competition. When you’re first starting out you want to look for things that have almost no competition. Once you’ve got that under your belt and you have been successful you can take on more competition.
So nick your telling me that you do 2 hours of work? I dont get how you build all those backlinks so fast hahah.
Question do you try and get the article index at all. Or are you just trying to get the main website index? Thanks nick
Later on I added back links to the site from my other sites. If you’re trying to get a website noticed by Google then it’s a good idea to link to it from any other sites you have.
I only worry about getting the main page indexed.
I seem to struggle to find keyword phrases that will get me to the top page on Google. I’ve done all the things that I technically should have. I’ve researched the keyword tools page, I’ve checked Google itself and other websites, I’ve found keywords that should -technically- have been goldmines. But for some reason they just haven’t ranked highly. I think that I might go back to the research stage and see if I can use some of your advanced searches as mentioned here, such as checking for other websites with the phrase in the title – that’s something I’ve not investigated before. Thank you, once again, for the great post.
Did you begin which keywords that have very little competition? It’s usually a good place to start.
Nick what happends if you rank in the top 10 for a search term then all the sudden your gone?
Did google sandbox me forever or is their still hope? Thanks
Without knowing your URL or your niche it’s hard to say what happened and how to fix it. Google periodically reshuffles its ranking.
Nick, regarding “perpetuating” EzineArticles (just seems wrong to call it “copying” or even “borrowing”), if the author has affiliate hop links embedded on certain words/phrases within the article, do those have to remain intact on the copy, and/or can I replace the hop links with my own affiliate ID?
I believe Squidoo was mentioned as another article source. Any others?
The main article source I have used is Ezine Articles. And if the article’s author has put affiliate links in the article then you should leave them intact.
Nick for the term killer ab workout can you tell me my rank and how close i am to reaching number 1. Somthing is messed up with my google i keep being show as number 1 and i dont know why. Can you tell me whats it going to take for me to reach number 1?
I can see that there would be a lot of competition for “killer ab workout”.
Is your keyword phrase in your domain? Is it in the URL? How many back links to have?
Most likely you won’t be over rank number one unless you put a ton of effort into building back links and a community.
Why don’t you create a series of videos people can use to get a “killer ab workout”?
Im starting to get upset about not breaking the top 10. Im floating around 10-15. I put in alot of work i dont feel like giving up but i feel like im fighting a losing battle.
Is your keyword phrase in your domain? How many back links to you have? How many pages of content you have?
