How 2 Hours Of Work Makes Me $100 A Month

1 Simple Site Makes Me $100 A Month

Today I am going to give away one of my secrets.  This particular site makes me around $100 a month and required very little effort to create.  When I say little effort I mean just a couple hours.

This website is:  http://stophairbreakage.org

Search Engine Rankings

Right now I have the number one and two positions on Google for the phrase Stop Hair Breakage.

Checkout My Stats

shb_stats

The process that I went through

Here is the exact process I went through.

  1. Keyword research
  2. Advertising check
  3. Content availability
  4. Find a good domain
  5. Build a simple site
  6. Basic linking and promotion

Keyword research

The first step I take is to find some potential keywords and then evaluate the competition.

Google offers a fabulous free tool for finding potentially good keywords.  You can check it out here.

I typically like keyword phrases that have three or more words in them.  The phrase “stop hair breakage” has three words in it.  The reason I like to go for phrases with more words is that there is typically less competition for that phrase.

Once I have found a good keyword phrase using the Google tool I will do a little bit of competition analysis.

First I will go to Google and search for:  stop hair breakage
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=stop+hair+breakage&aq=0&oq=stop+hair+br&aqi=g4g-m6

Looking at the search results I can see that there are 75,300  websites competing for this phrase.

Next I will go to Google and search for:  “stop hair breakage”
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=”stop+hair+breakage”&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g2g-m2

Looking at the search results there appear to be over a million competing sites.  This seems a little off considering the previous search results.

Now I’m going to search Google and see how many people have the the words stop hair breakage in their title
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=allintitle:stop+hair+breakage&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

There are only 1,480 sites that have these words in their title.  This is a low score and it looks very good.

Now I am going to search google and see how many people have the words stop hair breakage in their URL
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=allinurl:stop+hair+breakage&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

Only 373 websites have these words in their URL.  I can definitely compete with that!

Advertising check

Initially I plan to use Google AdSense for my advertising.  So it’s important to know if there are many ads for these particular keywords.

Going to Google I do a search for stop hair breakage and count how many Google advertisements I see over on the right hand side.  The more ads I see the more people are competing for this particular keyword.  More competition means that I make more money per click with Google AdSense.

I decide that the advertising is sufficient for the keywords:  stop hair breakage

Content availability

Next I need to worry about how I’m going to build content for the website I am thinking of building around the keyword phrase stop hair breakage.

One of my favorite ways to get content fast is to go to Ezine Articles. I did a quick search on Ezine Articles for my phrase stop hair breakage and I find that there are a few articles available with my keyword phrase in the title and body.  There aren’t as many articles as I would like ideally but that’s okay.

Find a good domain

The next step is to find a good domain.  Ideally you want to find a domain with your keyword phrase in it and have it be a “.com” or a “.org”.

I also recommend avoiding “.info” domains as they are frequently used by spammers and sometimes take longer to rank in the search engines.

I quickly discovered that the domain stophairbreakage.org was available.

It was at this point I decided to take the plunge and buy the domain.  Up until this point I was only doing research.  But the keyword research, advertising, and content on ezine articles looked good.  And I found the ideal domain.

Build a simple site

To build this site I am going to use WordPress.  WordPress has numerous advantages including:

  • search engine optimization is super easy
  • adding new content is a snap
  • you do not need to know any HTML
  • there are many plug-ins that will help you add advertising to your website
  • There are numerous web hosts that allow you to install WordPress with the click of a button

For my website stophairbreakage.org I paid someone a small amount of money to add content copied from Ezine Articles.

I also put my AdSense ad front and center where people were most likely to click on the ads.

Learn more about Google AdSense:

Basic linking and promotion

Many people think that this is the hardest part but frequently it’s quite easy.  Because there is so little competition I don’t have to get very many incoming links to get my website to rank high.

And that’s exactly what I did for stophairbreakage.org.

Great job again, Nick. The way you’re dominating your keyword phrase, I see you making more than $100 a month from this site in no time.

Listen to Nick’s advice, folks. You’ll be glad you did.

Ok, I have got to start working smarter not harder Nick. There are so many ways to work hard and make nothing, believe me, I know. I need to follow your lead, get off squidoo, and build some ‘real’ sites. Maybe put that adsense account to some good use.
Thanks for the great post!

Nick, thanks for the great post. Ezine Articles is a good place to look for content but consider writing some or outsourcing your own content as well. It is important to “mix up ” your site content a little, just in case there is some credibility to duplicate content.

Jen, don’t give up on Squidoo entirely…
Use it to drive traffic to your blog or site.

One problem i seem to have is skip over the research part. I then spend alot of time on everything else and my results end up botched =/ I’m getting a little bit better at it but I always seem to end up in competitive niches with competitive keywords. I just begin to doubt myself. Anyways that’s awesome how you did that with little work. I’m still in the learning phase with lots of investment and little to no return.

Reply

Nick Stewart October 14, 2009 at 11:59 am

Research is so important. You’ll notice the first 4 steps are nothing but research:
# Keyword research
# Advertising check
# Content availability
# Find a good domain

Make sure all 4 checkout before buying a domain and building a site.

The company that took me for a ride, (OVER $5000.00) gave me templates but no info. on what to do with them. They were suppose to be a coaching & training support company. They said nothing about nitches , addwords , auto respoders … I have sense closed the web site. I need something to get money coming in to support an online business. I’ve maxed my cards trying to make money with this other web builder. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. By the way I enjoyed your ” traffic tricks” email. Thanks!!

I am so sorry to hear that that company took you for a ride. There are a lot of scams out there and you have to be careful.

You can build your own website for free using blogger and start promoting affiliate products or run AdSense advertising.

I have to warn you that it’s a long road in your first $10 is probably the hardest to earn. Once you’ve done that making your next $10 is quite a bit easier.

Without knowing more about you and your skills and talents it’s hard to give specific advice.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for sharing this, this is very valuable information.

I’m a bit confused about using ezine articles for content. Is it ok to copy content from there as long as the author’s byline is included? Also how does duplicate content factor in here?

Chris

Reply

Nick Stewart February 3, 2010 at 1:46 pm

Yes that’s the whole point of Ezine Articles.

I don’t worry too much about duplicate content as long as there isn’t a lot of competition.

Reply

Sebastian February 9, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Nick,

What are your hard and fast cutoffs for keywords worth competing over? How would you rank the 4 research steps in order of importance?

Thanks.

Sebastian

Reply

Nick Stewart February 10, 2010 at 1:30 pm

I don’t really have any hard and fast cut offs for competition. What I do is pick a niche and generate whole bunch of keywords for that niche. I then do a competition analysis for each one and pick the best one or two keywords.

Sometimes none of the keywords are very good; all of them just have too much competition.

Also, as time goes on you get more and more comfortable with dealing with increasing levels of competition. When you’re first starting out you want to look for things that have almost no competition. Once you’ve got that under your belt and you have been successful you can take on more competition.

I only worry about getting the main page indexed.

I seem to struggle to find keyword phrases that will get me to the top page on Google. I’ve done all the things that I technically should have. I’ve researched the keyword tools page, I’ve checked Google itself and other websites, I’ve found keywords that should -technically- have been goldmines. But for some reason they just haven’t ranked highly. I think that I might go back to the research stage and see if I can use some of your advanced searches as mentioned here, such as checking for other websites with the phrase in the title – that’s something I’ve not investigated before. Thank you, once again, for the great post.

Nick, regarding “perpetuating” EzineArticles (just seems wrong to call it “copying” or even “borrowing”), if the author has affiliate hop links embedded on certain words/phrases within the article, do those have to remain intact on the copy, and/or can I replace the hop links with my own affiliate ID?

I believe Squidoo was mentioned as another article source. Any others?

Reply

Nick Stewart March 3, 2010 at 2:03 pm

The main article source I have used is Ezine Articles. And if the article’s author has put affiliate links in the article then you should leave them intact.

I can see that there would be a lot of competition for “killer ab workout”.

Is your keyword phrase in your domain? Is it in the URL? How many back links to have?

Most likely you won’t be over rank number one unless you put a ton of effort into building back links and a community.

Why don’t you create a series of videos people can use to get a “killer ab workout”?

I include the source, and the other stuff, but do i need to hyper link anything. I see you dont you just copy and paste it right in, that is why im doing.

All i need to know is if im meeting the requirments for ezine, and making sure im not copying content that i can be sued for. Thanks nick!

Thanks for this. Again, another topic I was interested in. However I am intrigued by the use of duplicate content. I am the content editor for our website and I used to create a blog entry and then replicate it on eZine articles in the hope of attracting further traffic. However, my search rankings actually decreased and when I looked into this further I found out that it is because Google does not like duplicate content. I think your article is very informative but I do think people need to be aware of the risks of just copying articles from other places on the Internet.
