How 2 Hours Of Work Makes Me $100 A Month

1 Simple Site Makes Me $100 A Month

Today I am going to give away one of my secrets.  This particular site makes me around $100 a month and required very little effort to create.  When I say little effort I mean just a couple hours.

This website is:  http://stophairbreakage.org

Search Engine Rankings

Right now I have the number one and two positions on Google for the phrase Stop Hair Breakage.

shb_google_rankings

Checkout My Stats

shb_stats

The process that I went through

Here is the exact process I went through.

  1. Keyword research
  2. Advertising check
  3. Content availability
  4. Find a good domain
  5. Build a simple site
  6. Basic linking and promotion

Keyword research

The first step I take is to find some potential keywords and then evaluate the competition.

Google offers a fabulous free tool for finding potentially good keywords.  You can check it out here.

I typically like keyword phrases that have three or more words in them.  The phrase “stop hair breakage” has three words in it.  The reason I like to go for phrases with more words is that there is typically less competition for that phrase.

Once I have found a good keyword phrase using the Google tool I will do a little bit of competition analysis.

First I will go to Google and search for:  stop hair breakage
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=stop+hair+breakage&aq=0&oq=stop+hair+br&aqi=g4g-m6

Looking at the search results I can see that there are 75,300  websites competing for this phrase.

Next I will go to Google and search for:  “stop hair breakage”
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=”stop+hair+breakage”&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g2g-m2

Looking at the search results there appear to be over a million competing sites.  This seems a little off considering the previous search results.

Now I’m going to search Google and see how many people have the the words stop hair breakage in their title
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=allintitle:stop+hair+breakage&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

There are only 1,480 sites that have these words in their title.  This is a low score and it looks very good.

Now I am going to search google and see how many people have the words stop hair breakage in their URL
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=allinurl:stop+hair+breakage&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

Only 373 websites have these words in their URL.  I can definitely compete with that!

Advertising check

Initially I plan to use Google AdSense for my advertising.  So it’s important to know if there are many ads for these particular keywords.

Going to Google I do a search for stop hair breakage and count how many Google advertisements I see over on the right hand side.  The more ads I see the more people are competing for this particular keyword.  More competition means that I make more money per click with Google AdSense.

I decide that the advertising is sufficient for the keywords:  stop hair breakage

Content availability

Next I need to worry about how I’m going to build content for the website I am thinking of building around the keyword phrase stop hair breakage.

One of my favorite ways to get content fast is to go to Ezine Articles. I did a quick search on Ezine Articles for my phrase stop hair breakage and I find that there are a few articles available with my keyword phrase in the title and body.  There aren’t as many articles as I would like ideally but that’s okay.

Find a good domain

The next step is to find a good domain.  Ideally you want to find a domain with your keyword phrase in it and have it be a “.com” or a “.org”.

I also recommend avoiding “.info” domains as they are frequently used by spammers and sometimes take longer to rank in the search engines.

I quickly discovered that the domain stophairbreakage.org was available.

It was at this point I decided to take the plunge and buy the domain.  Up until this point I was only doing research.  But the keyword research, advertising, and content on ezine articles looked good.  And I found the ideal domain.

Build a simple site

To build this site I am going to use WordPress.  WordPress has numerous advantages including:

  • search engine optimization is super easy
  • adding new content is a snap
  • you do not need to know any HTML
  • there are many plug-ins that will help you add advertising to your website
  • There are numerous web hosts that allow you to install WordPress with the click of a button

For my website stophairbreakage.org I paid someone a small amount of money to add content copied from Ezine Articles.

I also put my AdSense ad front and center where people were most likely to click on the ads.

Learn more about Google AdSense:

Basic linking and promotion

Many people think that this is the hardest part but frequently it’s quite easy.  Because there is so little competition I don’t have to get very many incoming links to get my website to rank high.

And that’s exactly what I did for stophairbreakage.org.

Great job again, Nick. The way you're dominating your keyword phrase, I see you making more than $100 a month from this site in no time.

Listen to Nick's advice, folks. You'll be glad you did.

I had pretty good luck with adsense before they really started hitting mini sites. I got my account banned for whatever reason. They aren’t very good about filling you in with details. I tried to reinstate my account and got denied. Am I basically banned from adsense, adwords, and google affiliates now for ever or is there a way around it to get back in?

Nick, thanks for the great post. Ezine Articles is a good place to look for content but consider writing some or outsourcing your own content as well. It is important to "mix up " your site content a little, just in case there is some credibility to duplicate content.

One problem i seem to have is skip over the research part. I then spend alot of time on everything else and my results end up botched =/ I'm getting a little bit better at it but I always seem to end up in competitive niches with competitive keywords. I just begin to doubt myself. Anyways that's awesome how you did that with little work. I'm still in the learning phase with lots of investment and little to no return.

Reply

Nick Stewart October 14, 2009 at 5:59 am

Research is so important. You'll notice the first 4 steps are nothing but research:

# Keyword research

# Advertising check

# Content availability

# Find a good domain

Make sure all 4 checkout before buying a domain and building a site.

I am so sorry to hear that that company took you for a ride. There are a lot of scams out there and you have to be careful.

You can build your own website for free using blogger and start promoting affiliate products or run AdSense advertising.

I have to warn you that it's a long road in your first $10 is probably the hardest to earn. Once you've done that making your next $10 is quite a bit easier.

Nick,

What are your hard and fast cutoffs for keywords worth competing over? How would you rank the 4 research steps in order of importance?

Thanks.

Sebastian

Reply

Nick Stewart February 10, 2010 at 7:30 am

I don't really have any hard and fast cut offs for competition. What I do is pick a niche and generate whole bunch of keywords for that niche. I then do a competition analysis for each one and pick the best one or two keywords.

Sometimes none of the keywords are very good; all of them just have too much competition.

Also, as time goes on you get more and more comfortable with dealing with increasing levels of competition. When you're first starting out you want to look for things that have almost no competition. Once you've got that under your belt and you have been successful you can take on more competition.

I seem to struggle to find keyword phrases that will get me to the top page on Google. I've done all the things that I technically should have. I've researched the keyword tools page, I've checked Google itself and other websites, I've found keywords that should -technically- have been goldmines. But for some reason they just haven't ranked highly. I think that I might go back to the research stage and see if I can use some of your advanced searches as mentioned here, such as checking for other websites with the phrase in the title – that's something I've not investigated before. Thank you, once again, for the great post.

Nick, regarding "perpetuating" EzineArticles (just seems wrong to call it "copying" or even "borrowing"), if the author has affiliate hop links embedded on certain words/phrases within the article, do those have to remain intact on the copy, and/or can I replace the hop links with my own affiliate ID?

I believe Squidoo was mentioned as another article source. Any others?

The main article source I have used is Ezine Articles. And if the article's author has put affiliate links in the article then you should leave them intact.

I am the content editor for our website and I used to create a blog entry and then replicate it on eZine articles in the hope of attracting further traffic. However, my search rankings actually decreased and when I looked into this further I found out that it is because Google does not like duplicate content. I think your article is very informative but I do think people need to be aware of the risks of just copying articles from other places on the Internet.

So far as duplicate content goes I have to say that it really depends. It depends on the competitiveness of your keywords that you were targeting. It's a lot easier to rank with duplicate content if there isn't a ton of competition.

Awesome, hope to get that kind of monthly earnings too with just a single site and a little 2 hours of work.

just wondering..after your site rank at the top of google, do you continue to add more content to your adsense site? or just leave it as it is?

Yeah, Nick really helped me in getting backlinks fast like commenting on blogs with top commentators plugin. I never had an idea about that until I visited this site.

"to add content copied from Ezine Articles"

Does this mean just 'republishing' or spinning/rewriting the articles?

Reply

Nick August 21, 2011 at 9:59 am

Yes, it means republishing.

Hey Nick,

I don't see your adsence links on the side bar where they usually are.

are they integrated into your posts some how?

On my http://stophairbreakage.org the adsense ads are there (I just checked).

On Nick's traffic tricks I don't always run adsense ads. I periodically test different types of ads.

Great instructions Nick.

Do you normally look at the number of searches you would expect to get for the term? Do you have a range that you look for?

Yes but it’s different for each niche. I don’t have a really good guideline for all niches.

Do you find that small AdSense sites still make money – are they effective now, as they used to be?

How many pages does one of these adsense sites typically consist?

Nick October 24, 2011 at 6:55 pm

Yes they can still make money but it’s a bit harder than it used to be. And the number of pages really depends on the niche.

And this took you 2 hours? You’re a freak! :)

I think I take longer doing keyword research than that. And finding a good domain can also be a pain.

Do you find that Google puts you in a sandbox, or do you get some good links onto the site from somewhere and avoid sand in your toes?!

I avoid the sandbox by picking very specific keywords.

Proper keyword research is critical for sure. I realized that early in my career when I was in a rush to get things off the ground and went for a highly competitive niche without doing much keyword research. I barely even broke the top-100 search results after months of trying and then I realized how important it was to start slowly with a smaller niche and proper keyword research first.

I totally agree, Properly researching the niche, getting a good domain and hassle free web hosting is the key towards a good blog. I’ve wasted a lot of time and money in my initial years but slowly and gradually I learnt about various techniques. Great article you got there mate, explaining almost everything.

This, as usual, is a very detailed explanation that should be very helpful even for newbies. Following your advice to a large extent Nick, I have recently been developing a network of adsense sites in one specific niche that I have experience in and can therefore write the content myself. I already have six of those active (2 debuted in the past 24 hours), and am hoping to start seeing adsense clicks and income very soon, steadily increasing thereafter.

Hi Nick,

It’s about 3 months later, and my updates on this project are:

* Added 8Th site in the series this week (6 of the others are 90 days old or more)
* Added highly-targeted Amazon.com offerings to each site about 2 weeks ago
* At least one of the sites has recently been found at # 11 on Google
* Have not yet gained an average of at least 10 visitors a day to any of them, yet
* No adSense income yet as of end February 2012
* Changed adSense colors recently

At this point I’m only going to consider adding to this network of sites upon gaining adsense clicks and Amazon affiliate income through them.
The backlink building involved with each new site is really an important factor to consider, as well.

I would recommend focusing on one site and making $100 from that site before switching to another site. You should also read:

Hi Nick, I’m pleased to share with you the good news that after 4 months, 13 days, and 166 or 167 page views (some my own), I was blessed last Thursday March 29 with my first adsense click through one of the sites described above. Before that I had an adsense account value of $0.82, yes 82 cents. That click last week was worth 63 cents! A 75% gain in my adsense account from one click, and hopefully many more to follow, along with a diversity of other methods through which earnings will be added as well.

Nick, A further update, I have been blessed with more adsense clicks on that same niche site, the ones from last saturday were worth 94 cents each and there were 4. It was a more than doubling of my adsense account value overnight, and of course I hope it continues upward and also spreads to the other sites in the network.

@Best Make Money Online
Hi, I followed your interesting comments on this post and would like to know what you use to build your sites. Are they plain HTML or Wordpress (or other CMS)?

Also would like to get some ideas on how you interlink the sites or if they are all stand-alone webproperties.

Thanks for your kind reply.
