Okay, I admit that this might be a little counter-intuitive and goes against all the prevailing wisdom on the Internet these days.
But let me explain in this short video.

Hey Nick…
Yeah, I know what you mean about having to pander to the search engines, feels like all we do is dance to their tunes – it's like we have no choice! Funny because I got into this whole internet marketing thing looking for a bit more freedom…
Like what you say about creating a following and I guess that starts by having good content on your site, practical stuff that people can do right away and see results.
Personally I'm learning lots here so… I'll be back!
Thanks…
Brye
Quality content is an important key to building a following. It's probably the first step.
Hey Nick,
Okay I must admit when I first saw this post I said to myself, what is he talking about. But after watching the video I totally agree.
Thanks for sharing your traffic stats with us. It was interesting that you only get about 18% of your traffic thru Google. I figured with your site being well established for quite some time now and with the great content that you'd be getting a lot more traffic thru search engines.
Most of my traffic comes from referrals also and I don't bother with Google on my blog. I just figure if I keep posting good content eventually I'll have so much content that the search engines will find me without me having to do any SEO. I write for people and not search engines.

Yah I purposely made the title a little provocative.
"I write for people and not search engines." – that's a great way of putting it.
Great job with this video, Nick. Thanks for spreading the word about the truth behind search engine optimization. It's great if you have good SEO rankings, but it isn't vital anymore, as you explained.
Mark
Thanks Mark. How's your stuff going?
I do pay attention to my SE rankings but I think that is just vanity! Like Nick, I get most of my traffic through referrals.
The SE will bring you nice steady traffic but getting good rankings can take a lot of your time. You can get big bursts of traffic via social networking and Web 2.0 as Nick has pointed out. These thechnoques can bring you the visitors but it is your job, via your quality content, that will keep them coming back.
As all the wise people say, 'Content is King!'
Thanks for sharing Nick, great info as always.
Thanks Darren. Hurray for great content!
Thanks for great content
Has your returning visitor count continued to grow?
Yes it is still growing. It goes up and down a lot and kind of depends on the day of the week and when I do e-mail sends. But the overall trend is up.
