Hi Nick

I am interested to know, how to seperate keywords on the title tag, and how I get the search engine spiders to return on a regular basis.

Look forward to the book.

Hi Nick,

Here’s my question.

How do I use keyword tags correctly in blog posts to get free traffic from the search engines?

Do the tag keywords need to be related to the article content or the target audience?

Thanks,

Dave

P.S. Looking forward to your new ebook product. If it’s anything like ‘Nicks Traffic Tricks’ it will be a great resource.

What is the best way to build a list completely free of any expenses and without going through all the trouble promoting on giveaway events and getting no results?

Sorry Nick but that is so “lame”. Another eBook about all this stuff you can read free in every second blog? Come on :-( I’ll bet there won’t be anything really new (this isn’t against you). Why don’t you use your spare time (and good writing skills) to create a really unique product and not another one of these “I’ve read that before” ones?

I bet there is some hidden knowledge inside you that people really want to buy like a hungry crowd would buy cheesburgers.

Okay but I don’t want just to flame :-) so here’s my question:

What to do when I just can’t overcome procrastination to use traffic tricks and generate shitloads of cash? Thats a serious question 9 of 10 “internet marketers” regularly come up with. And if you earn good cash in the net you know that thats what seperates the successfull from the 2cent a day earners.

Also good chance for cross selling :-D maybe a motivation product ;) maybe you know the motivated mind?

Okay thats all,
Stefan

Viral traffic is one of the hardest ways to get traffic. I cover this in a little more detail here:
http://nickstraffictricks.com/2148_question-box-what-is-the-best-method-for-viral-traffic/

Long-term traffic is something that everybody really needs to focus on so I wrote a post about it a couple days ago:
http://nickstraffictricks.com/2151_question-box-what-is-the-best-method-for-long-term-traffic/

For me personally, social media and return visitors are my best sources of traffic. I do get some traffic from Google to different posts that rank well in the search engines but it seems that that traffic is frequently dwarfed by the amount of traffic I get from stumble upon.

Nick,

I am looking for other advertising avenues. I do not want to become dependent upon Google Adsense and I am aware of their TOS. What other types of advertising are available and if I decide to go with that company, am I allowed to advertise other ads on the same site?

Thank you.

There are numerous alternatives to Google AdSense. There are many different affiliate networks like commission junction or clickbank. It really depends on what your particular niche is.

You should be aware that every network has their own terms of service that you will need to abide by and they are not all the same.

There is a video on my other blog which shows you how to find advertisers for your particular website:

*How do I get low priced keywords and avoid the competitors main keywords where the bidding are very high?

*Some people suggest that we need to star a campaign with some broad keywords (I mean not phrase, not exact ) in order to evaluate the right keywords that are converting and then add them to the groups in phrase and exact version, is that true?

*How do we evaluate those keywords found in google keyword tool that shows zero traffic ? since that tool is not accurate, should we remove them or simply ignore that information and add it to the campaign?

*Which tools do you recommend for keyword research? and how do we know that a lateral keyword is still relevant to our product? for example: my main keyword, but very competitive is “maintenance software”, a lateral keyword would be “car oil replacement”, since this is a type of problem found if you don’t do maintenance, it can be a related keyword, but… will my customers buy my maintenance software by typing this lateral keyword? what method do you suggest?

*Landing pages and keyword generation: is it good for adwords to insert automatically the keyword using scripts in the landing page text, title, etc?

*Is it good to have one adword group with just one keyword( three variations )?

Reply

Nick Stewart February 10, 2010 at 2:16 pm

Wow you have a lot of questions here! I’ll do my best to answer them.

*How do I get low priced keywords and avoid the competitors main keywords where the bidding are very high?

You typically need to find a very specific keyword phrases. For example there’s a lot of competition for the keyword “dogs” and I suspect that there is a lot less competition for something specific like “dogs that snore at night”

So look for long tail keyword phrases.

*Some people suggest that we need to star a campaign with some broad keywords (I mean not phrase, not exact ) in order to evaluate the right keywords that are converting and then add them to the groups in phrase and exact version, is that true?

I have been out of the AdWords game for some time now so I don’t really know.

*How do we evaluate those keywords found in google keyword tool that shows zero traffic ? since that tool is not accurate, should we remove them or simply ignore that information and add it to the campaign?

This is a tough question. I think in some cases there is some traffic but it is so low or inconsistent that it shows up as zero. In other cases it traffic may have been really high but now the it has dropped to nearly 0. An example of this might be “Harry Potter book 7″ which received a ton of traffic when the book was first released. Now that the book is been out for some time I suspect the traffic has dropped off substantially.

If you’re looking to add them to an AdWords campaign you have little to lose by adding them. If they truly get no traffic then you won’t be charged anything because you won’t get any clicks. Give it a try and let us know what happens.

I highly recommend the Google keyword tool. As for your question about lateral keywords, you have to know your market. You must know what problems people are trying to solve and which keywords have nothing to do with your market.

When you say “maintenance software” you mean software that helps you maintain your computer? Or do you mean software that helps you do car maintenance? I am not clear on this.

*Landing pages and keyword generation: is it good for adwords to insert automatically the keyword using scripts in the landing page text, title, etc?

Some people have done this with success but I have never tried it. Rather I would focus on your determining the needs of your people and finding the few keywords that exactly pinpoint this need. I am guessing that if you laser targeted keywords will make you far more money than many general keywords.

*Is it good to have one adword group with just one keyword( three variations )?

I’m not sure about this. From what I’ve read it’s best to have an ad group with a small set of very specific and similar keywords. But don’t take my advice. Instead try it for yourself.

Hey Nick,

How do you use the RSS feed to your blog to gain more traffic. I keep hearing about this but not real sure how to go about it. I know it’s about submitting your RSS feed to RSS feed directories but I wish you could go into greater detail how the whole process works.

RSS feeds is a subject I’ve kind of neglected which I know is not in my best interest but it just haven’t been at the top of my priority list.

Later,

Reply

Nick Stewart February 10, 2010 at 2:24 pm

There are a couple different ways to get traffic with RSS.

The first is to use a platform for your website that creates an RSS feed for you. If you use blogger or WordPress or any other blogging engine this is already done automatically. You also want to make sure that people can see a link to your RSS on every page of your website. If people don’t see a link they won’t click on it and you will never have any subscribers.

Once you have subscribers you want to make sure that you post new and interesting stuff on a regular basis to maintain your subscribership. You also want to use social networks to drive traffic which will help increase the number of subscribers you have.

This is the approach that I am taking for my blog.

There are some other things you can do like submitting your RSS feed to RSS feed directories. I haven’t done much of this but I did write about it in a previous post:

Hi Nick,

1.Is it advisable to join websites that provide free ready-made affiliate landing pages including Click-Bank popular niches where you pay only for the hosting and choose your own domain name ? You are also provided with video tutorials and general advice on how to promote your niches. And you can ask the host to build other niche landing pages of your choice.

2. How good are Free Press Release websites as traffic tools and if good how does one maximize them or optimize them?

3. Is Squidoo one of the best tools to increase traffic to ones page? Is it a good page rank improver?

Reply

Nick Stewart February 12, 2010 at 1:43 pm

1 – These types of programs work for some people but not for most. If you do the same thing everyone else is doing you’re not going to make any money. So I suggest taking on these programs and figuring out some way to add value that no one else is.

2 – Working with press releases is something I have not really done very much of to be honest. But I will add that to my “to do” list right now.

3 – Squidoo has kind of fallen off the radar it seems. It may be a page rank improver but I am not sure if it’s worth your time. You may be better off just adding content to your blog or website.

How do I make use out of misspelt keywords on google. When doing research, it is possible to come across keywords that closely match your search but they are misspelt or will have a comma, apostrophe or full etc in the wrong and as a word are meaningless, but in terms of searches, there can quite a significant amount. Now how does one embed those words onto a page.

Once you find a common misspelled word that has a lot of searches you can embed that in your webpage.

Hi,

Using different keywords in different articles might be helpful, but thats not really comparing like with like, and any noted outcomes could easily be misinterpreted.

Any tips would be most helpful.

Nick Stewart February 12, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Good question. I think maybe we should back up a little bit and look at why you want to get traffic. Are you trying to sell a product? If you are selling something then you should traffic which keywords give you the best conversion on your product. Once you know which keywords convert the best and you can look at which articles send you the most traffic for these keywords.

Another thing you can do is write a couple articles on keyword one and see how much traffic it gets. Compare this with the amount of traffic you get from the same number of articles for keyword two.

This goes back to goals. Why do you want traffic? What specific action you want them to take? Is it to join your newsletter or click on ads or buy something?

When looking at my website’s statistics I try to figure out which pages receive the most traffic. It’s usually a handful of pages that receive more traffic than all the other pages put together.

Hi Nick:

2 questions, I got banned from using Adsense for no good reason and lost the appeal (shocking). You can not fight the 800 pound gorilla. What is the best alternative to Adsense that tries to match the ads to the content.

Why are some backlinks more effective than others? For example, I have been using Angelas backlinks for a couple of months now, all high PR sites, yet none have shown up. If I comment on a PR3 site that is relevant to my site and uses top commenter and/or keyword luv, I get all kinds of backlinks that helped my ranking for a particular site. I don’t understand what works and what doesn’t being new to backlinking.

Reply

Nick Stewart February 16, 2010 at 1:57 pm

There are many alternatives to Google AdSense but it really depends on what your niche is. Without knowing your niche I can’t really make a suggestion.

With that said, there is a short video I posted on my other blog about how to monetize websites:
http://www.nicksinternetmarketing.com/48_video-how-to-quickly-monetize-your-blog/

The main problem I have had with Angela’s back links is that it takes Google a long time to find those pages that link to my website. In some cases Google never find them at all.

Backlinks are a confusing subject. How to know how many are necessary? What types are best — out of all the latest schemes we read? Which ones LAST? Which give only a very temporary boost in ranking? How about social bookmarking?

Thanks again — cheers,

Building back links is a bit of a game and can be very time-consuming. I’m getting to the point where I don’t think back links really matter for me because they take so much time and the tactics are always changing.

Instead I recommend focusing on building fabulous content and then using social bookmarking to spread the word. I think this is the best way to go. I cover this in some depth in a different post:

Hello Nick

What about how to create capture pages so when we get all this traffic it dosent go to waste and also were do you great all those great looking web graphics and good photos to put on your blog etc ( god free ones out there )

Reply

Nick Stewart February 16, 2010 at 2:06 pm

When creating a capture page you need to identify what the person’s needs are and cater to them. I find that simple capture pages are the best in the least likely to confuse or distract people. Obviously you should not have any links on the page that could lead the visitor somewhere else.

Also you want to make sure that you get targeted traffic to that page.

As for the graphics, most of them are free on the Internet. There is a great post that details how to find images online that are free to use:

Give people a reason to come back to your website and you will never have to worry about your ranking in Google.

I have not used Facebook fan pages yet to build traffic but it is on my to do list. My first thought though is to give people what they want. If people are looking for home business opportunities then give them legitimate and valuable information about this. Maybe you could review some different opportunities and give your readers an inside look.

If your sole purpose is to advertise you’ll probably fail.

My question is: Leaving aside PPC, what is the quickest easiest way to drive traffic to your site? I work all day in my offline business, and have a few hours to spare at night (i’ve a young family and an ill wife) so after creating wordpress websites, filling with content pages and posts, installing all the SEO plugins etc…. i don’t have much time for anything else, though my wife may be able to do something throughout the day, but she’s not really interested in IM so it wouldn’t want to be too taxing?

Hope you’re well Nick, keep up the good work!

The best way that I can think of is to find people that are interested in buying your clothing and target them. If the people that would buy your clothes are new mothers then I would find forums online when you mothers congregate. So start by identifying your target audience and then figure out where you can find them in large concentrations. Promoting an e-commerce site is similar to an information site.

I would also recommend putting one product per page.

I’d like to see something on newsletter marketing, I have Jeff Walker and Frank Kern’s stuff, but I’d like to see more innovative ways to grow a list organically, possibly something even on co-registration.

Most of the material out there focuses on increasing traffic to a site or blog, obviously this can be used to build a list but what about managing it and keeping it fresh? How often should I email my list? How often should I pitch an affiliate product? Nothing I have done in internet marketing has worked as well as maintaining lists in different niches and yet there is so little material out there on how to improve it and maximize profit.

I doubt I’d buy another SEO traffic generating ebook, but a course on list generation and monetization, and email copywriting skills, I’d pay top dollar.

It might be a little elementary for you but it might help.

In a nutshell best way to maximize profit is to first build a relationship with your readers. Invite them to ask questions and do your best to answer them.

When you’re looking to advertise, choose things that will help them solve problems they have.

I tried e-mail my list a couple times a week and tell them of some new blog post that’s informative and helpful to them. I focus my advertising on my blog. Perhaps I should try doing more advertising within my e-mails.

If you use WordPress there is a simple plug-in that puts a “ReTweet This” button on every blog post. It allows visitors to retweet your post with a click of button. It also displays how many people have tweeted about it.

It’s called the Tweetcount Plugin and you can download it here for free:

I have read tons of stuff on getting traffic and have practiced a bunch of it. I use Micro Niche Finder for keyword research and practice pretty good onsite SEO. Even though I get some traffic and some halfway decent clickthru rates, I still feel that there is something that I could do better, because I never see the huges amounts of traffic that all the sales letters promise.

So, I think what I would like to see is for you to take a new site and document all the steps that you go through to get a lot of traffic flowing to that site (excluding a mailout to your list). I do like PDFs more than videos. With a PDF you can make notes, find and re-read something a whole lot faster and I don’t have to be tied to the computer to read. Plus, I can read faster than videos can talk. And you can skip things that you already know a lot about.

Oh well, these are just my thoughts. Hope they help.

Jackie

Thank you for the feedback. Some people seem to like videos more and others like PDF’s. It’s good to learn what your audience prefers.

I have thought about documenting all the steps to build a site and start getting traffic but the trouble I’m running into is that different niches require different things. I have done something like this in the past and you can read about it here:

How often should website content pages, that have been specifically set up for individual keywords, get updated?

For articles – is it best to create a large number – or just have a few with the best article sites and then update them regularly?

Are one way back links becoming less important ? Rather, is google giving more weight to websites with lots of fresh and relevant content?

Nick Stewart February 20, 2010 at 6:02 pm

I don’t think you need to worry about updating specific pages as long as they offer valuable content to your readers.

For articles, I would start with a few high-quality articles and submit them to the top two or three articles sites. See how much traffic you get from them.

I have a link the article about article marketing here:
http://nickstraffictricks.com/1132_advanced-article-marketing/

Back links are becoming less relevant as Google is able to find better ways to determine which websites give better content. With that said, it will be a while before back links stop mattering.

My question is:

If you leave a comment on a no follow blog and it doesn’t have the Google love or whatever they call it…

Doesn’t that link still have power?

It seems to me that the link would still be good, but not on a search engine level. The fact that the customer makes the purchase or signs up would have more weight in the long run than a stupid search engine that pays nothing.

My customers pay my paycheck, not the search engines…

Is this a valid point or is it a bunch of bull?

What’s you take on it?

Thanks,

Leslie

It’s certainly a valid point. Many people get traffic simply by leaving liable comments on other peoples’ blogs. Visitors these comments and click the link back to your website.

Hi Nick,

I’m on the verge of creating my first website, so,
my question is of a more elementary nature.

As with 99.99% of all beginners I don’t have the
bucks for a big launch (or any kind of a launch
for that matter). I would like to see Jackies idea
in action-the step by step implementation of a new
site. I also am a big fan of PDF’s, easy to transport,
read wherever you are, and make notes.

So, in addition to article writing, what are some
other economical(cheap) ways to try to attract
attention.

Thanks for your time.

Mel

Luckily you don’t have to shell out a ton of money to get started. In fact I don’t think you need a huge launch.

Rather, you need to start by giving value to your readers. Figure out what they want and give it to them. I think this is a better use of your time than article marketing.

Once you have great content and start to build a community then you can leverage social media and have your message spread.

I wrote a long post about this here:

Hello Nick,

As a newb I am suffering from abit of information overload as I have read alot of your blog posts and some of your information products, as well as many other blogs and info products. I have set up my first blog http://www.yourdirtylittlesecrets.com (Its a “Tell your Secrets Here, Gossip, Rumors, Conspiracy theory type of blog) and I am wondering what types of traffic generation tips you would give me for this type of site. It’s a little different than alot of other monetized niche blog sites that I have read about creating.

My goal is to learn to set up various sites and blogs to help earn some additional income to help support my family and I would like to knwo what methods you would recommend to drive traffic to my site listed above (www.yourdirtylittlesecrets.com) and for any other blogs that I will be creating.

Thanks

Michael

It’s good to you took action and set up a blog and got started. You can read all the advice you want but there is no substitute for taking action and learning as you go.

You should focus on giving people what they want. You want to build a community. There are lots of successful gossip and rumors websites and they all have one thing in common: they stay up-to-date with the latest stuff. This is what people want. They want to know what’s going on right now and so you will have to stay on top of that.

First off, I visited your link and saw the following message:
“The blog you were looking for was not found.”

It looks like Google has banned you. Is that right?

You’re going to have a hard time getting single page websites ranked high in the search engines. Most successful sites have many pages of content.

I recommend going through my SEO tutorial that I recently wrote and pay special attention to the last part where I talk about how SEO is dying:

I recently read a post on warrior forum about writing articles and back linking. The author of the post stated that he makes sure the article content does not have anything that relates to the web site he is trying to get ranked. In this manner his article is not in competition with his website and he still gets powerful back links (which have the keywords contained in the anchor text). I’ve started to experiment with this method with some success as I have been able to get four sites on the front page of Google within days of creation. Of course the keywords I am targeting are in the URL as well so I’m not sure if that is what is giving them the ranking juice. You have more experience than I so I would like to know if have you experimented with this sort of back linking or something similar and what your thoughts are on whether it is a worthwhile method?

Nick Stewart February 20, 2010 at 6:25 pm

To be honest, I haven’t done a ton of article marketing. I found it time-consuming and decided rather to focus on building a community with my content.

I suspect that we some of your ranking will come from the fact that your targeted keywords are in the URL.

Hey Nick,

My question is about the effectiveness of social bookmarking. Is social bookmarking really that effective anymore? I read somewhere about creating multiple accounts on the various social sites and bookmarking your sites’ pages repeatedly. I have tried it and had little success. Are the search engines smart enough to realize the bookmarks are all coming from the same person?

Thanks,
Mark

Reply

Nick Stewart February 20, 2010 at 6:28 pm

The idea of creating multiple accounts for social media services is missing the point in my opinion.

In my experience social media only works when you great content that people will want to spread. When you have something that is worthy to spread then you utilize social media to get the word out.

If you have crap content then having more social media accounts won’t convince people to spread your crap.

Have a further question:

Lets say I create an article called ” yellow widgets”

Should that article have a link to just the authors home page in the resource area (Eg http://www.abc dot com) or would it be best to create a KW rich page on my site e (eg : http://www.abc dot com/yellowwidgets) and have that link in the articles resource box?

Reply

Nick Stewart February 20, 2010 at 6:29 pm

I would have a link to a specific page. Part of this reasoning is that some people will actually see the link and click on it. You want those people to go to something relevant.

How does one get above 100 hits to a website in a day? On top of that, is there a way to analyze where my traffic strategy is weakest?

Reply

Nick Stewart February 20, 2010 at 6:31 pm

This is a really hard question to answer because it really depends on your niche. If you have a lot of competition and there are not many people searching for your niche then it will be very difficult.

I would also focus less on the number of hits and more on the quality of the traffic you receive. For a few dollars you can buy 100 hits a traffic but they won’t be worth anything because they are not targeted.

I am a newbie to this traffic driving thing,is there any end to
all that one must do to get traffic to a site if all you have
is Adsense-any information would be helpful!
How do I use social media to drive traffic?
How to use a blog like squidoo and have more to say than just a line or two?
How to make a signature file for all
three with a web address without spamming every time you go to a forum?
If you do these, do you still need to place ads
on other sites? It’s going to get tougher to rank up top and keep
good content rolling in a smooth way.
Obviously you have people. So how does one person do all the
stuff that you’re talking about and not be overwhelmed. There is just so much
information it’s like a three thousand page book-how do you learn it
and still fit in family, job, sleep, etc.?
All these questions I ask and more.

There is no end to the number of things you can do to get traffic. The trick is to prioritize them and figure out which things are worth your time.

Social media can help you get traffic for sure you must start with great content. When you have great content check out stumble upon and onlywire. These will help you get traffic from social media. Also look at what I’ve written about twitter.

If you’re just starting out I don’t recommend playing with squidoo.

Again if you’re starting out I recommend focusing on one website I’m putting that in your signature when you post on forums.

It can seem overwhelming at times. I suggest starting small; choose one website that you want to build up and get traffic to. Build a community where you answer peoples’ questions and generate content around their needs. You can read more about this here:

Hey Nick,

I’d like to know what kind of income goals I should set for my websites. I’d also like to know when I should cut my losses and abandon a website.

Thanks!

Reply

Nick Stewart February 20, 2010 at 6:38 pm

This is really hard to answer because it’s different for every person. Some people have a lot of time and very little money and so they are willing to work for next to nothing to build up their website.

Other people have a family to take care of and other responsibilities. These people put a much higher price on their time.

I would definitely set a goal for your website for how much you want to earn, I can’t really tell you what that goal should be and when you should abandon it.

Is using web 2.0 sites worth my time, and if so what is the best way to maximize traffic generation threw them?

Does Social bookmarking still have the kick that it used to with traffic generation and if so whats a good method, or is it just good for getting indexed?

Reply

Nick Stewart February 20, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Social media and social bookmarking are excellent sources of traffic. More and more people are turning to them to search for things and get information. They are also decent I getting new indexed by Google but may not help you as much to get ranked high in Google.

But the real power of social media is when you have great content and you tell a few other people via social media. They will spread the word to other people who will spread it even further.

I was told a good method for generating traffic is to give away a brandable report/ebook, which seems to be a good idea. However, after a while you are back to square one: how do you generate traffic to the giveaway?

Reply

Nick Stewart February 20, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Yes, that is a sort of chicken and the egg problem.

To begin with give value to your readers. Figure out what they want and give it to them. Build a community. You can read more about this here:

Almost everything you need is free.

There are a few things that I do pay for: $20 a month for an e-mail autoresponder, $10 a year for my domain, $5-$10 a month for web hosting. I also paid forDLGuard for payment processing as well as Thesis (my WordPress theme).
