Question Box: What is the best method for viral traffic?

Rachel asked:

What is the best method for viral traffic?

I think getting viral traffic is one of the most difficult methods of traffic generation.

When something goes viral it’s passed on from one person to another. So you’ve got to make something that people are going to want to pass on. Make something that is funny or shocking or inspiring.

I recommend you put yourself in the mind of other people and ask, “What I forward this on to my friends and family and coworkers?”  Make something that is worthy of being passed on to other people.

Unfortunately most marketers are concerned with what is in it for them. They would be a lot more successful if they asked, “What’s in it for other people?” I think this is the secret viral marketing.

Although I am no expert on the subject I have had a couple of my posts go a little bit viral. They are all different but they have one thing in common: all of them give value to the reader. Readers are so happy that they pass it on to their friends.

These posts of mine I have had some degree of viral success:

I have done some advertising with stumble upon which I plan to write about later. However, as soon as I stopped paying the traffic dried up. I don’t believe that paying stumble upon money is a good way to achieve a viral effect. When something goes viral people pass it on of their own free will.
