thanks nick, another great tip. I'm surprised wordpress does that as their default. I'm sure they know that it's completely unoptimized that way. Even blogger makes urls like that by default.

I bet other people are wondering why you should do your urls-like-this, rather than_like_this, or evenlikethis?

By default WordPress creates URLs with the dashes between works. I think underscores would work just as well but it probably doesn't matter much.

I do think that you want some sort of separator between your words for search engine optimization.

For example if you had a post titled "Red Ford Mustang convertibles for sale" and you didn't have any dashes in your URL it would look like RedFordMustangconvertiblesforsale. This looks like a jumble of words to humans and nearly every computer. When Google crawls your website I'm not sure they will be of the parse this and figure out keywords in your URL.

That is a really good point Nick, but then again when I search Google it still always picks up the keyword domains with no dashes. But this could just be from keyword optimisation.

I'm not sure I completely agree. Google is somehow able to parse stophairbreakage (a jumble of words) to figure out that it's relevant to people searching for "stop hair breakage". Otherwise stop-hair-breakage.org would be the optimal choice.

But since blogger (google) uses dashes in urls as a convention it's probably safe to assume that that's the best way.

What I'm more interested in is if dashes in the main domain are just as strong as not, since many times good three word domains are all taken, but still have low competition.

Ahhh, I understand.

I don't really know if domains with dashes are just as effective as domains without dashes or any separator. My gut says that they are not quite as effective but I don't have any real evidence to support this.

Hi Nick

Great video, yes this is a good tip because you can also use this url in article directories resource box linking back to your page, with your main keywords in the anchor text.

Cheers

Ian

Hi Nick. Ok so I will have to follow your directions to change my site. I was excited to see my site in the video. I have been wondering how to get my title in my url. You turned what I thought would be a long process into something simple and easy. For that you get my highest recommendations. Thanks again.

You're very welcome. WordPress makes it super easy to have your keywords automatically inserted into your URL.

Nick I am wondering if the backlnks to my pages will still be valid after I add the title to the url. I have have been backlinking to pages that had the number still in the url. Will these backlinks still follow to the correct page?

If you are using a newer version of WordPress the links should still be valid. But don't take my word for it. Instead make the change and make sure the links still work.
