Nick's Traffic Tricks

My crazy idea on how to get traffic

Nearly all of the traffic advice on the Internet focuses on how you can get more traffic working by yourself.

I want to try something different. I’ve been thinking about doing something a little more collaborative where you and I work together to get more traffic.

This is kind of a new idea and I would really appreciate your feedback. It might be a terrible idea or it might be great.  I won’t know until I get a little feedback.

So I want to propose a joint venture of sorts between you and me to get more traffic, if you’re interested.

My proposal

I am proposing to write a short e-book on how to get traffic using social media. This guide would be different in that it would contain stories and case studies from various website owners like you that detail how to get traffic with social media.

Each person that is interested would submit a short summary or case study of how they use social media to get traffic and build a community for their website.

It doesn’t have to be very long. I’m thinking one paragraph at the shortest or up to a couple of typed pages in length.

What’s in it for you?

Everybody wants to know how it will benefit them.

Everyone who has something included will get a link back to their website  At the bottom of your submission I would include 3 things:

  1. a short bio of yourself (140 characters)
  2. a link to your website
  3. and the link to one of your social media accounts

Here’s a quick example:

My part

My parts in all of this is to take all of the submissions and decide which ones should be included. Of those that are included I will do some minor editing for clarity if needed.

I will then compile all of the submissions into a PDF complete with an introduction, table of contents, copyright statement, and page numbers.

I have written several e-books before and so this won’t be very difficult for me.

I will also have a section written on how I use social media to get traffic to my website.

Giving it away for free

My intention is for this to be given away for free so it reaches as many people as possible. My desire is to have top-notch content included in this. I want people to be so impressed that they pass it on to others.

The copyright statement at the beginning of the e-book will make it clear that this e-book is free and and intended to be passed on.

Will every submission be accepted?

If you have some great insight about how to use social media to get traffic I can almost guarantee that it will be included.

On the other hand if you write about something that does not offer any real insight then it will most likely not included.  Anything that is purely self-promoting will be excluded.

The goal here is to create a free e-book is jampacked with valuable tips and tricks and insights into how to use social media effectively.

How many submissions will be accepted?

My hope is to have at least 10 submissions.  And ideally 20 or more but I really have no upper limit.

I plan to accept submissions for the next couple weeks.

How far could it go?

I have about 2000 people between my e-mail with that I will send the e-book to. I will also post a link to it on my blog and tweet about it.

My hope is that it will be so valuable that people will pass it to their friends and the e-book will go viral.

PDF or blog post?

Some the benefits of having the PDF are that it easily e-mailed to other people and that your content is protected. Another benefit is that someone can download it, print it out, and read it off-line.

I have also considered putting the content on the web in the form of a blog post instead of a PDF since blog posts are far more likely to get tweeted, stumbled, digged, etc.  It may have a better chance going viral if it’s a blog post.

I would love your opinion on this.

How to submit something for the e-book

If have some great insight in how to use social media to get traffic you send me an e-mail with “social media traffic” in the subject.

This is a great idea and will give an opportunity for us to see working examples of how to get traffic from social media, hopefully some of the less obvious sources that don't always occur to us.

That was kind of the idea here. I think a lot of people looking for working examples of how to use social media. It seems like most of the stuff out there is and have enough examples and costs a lot of money.

I think PDF and Blog Post should do it. You know twitter users are not going to download ebooks while as people getting your emails might. Try it and let us know how it works out.

So you're saying I should do both the PDF and the blog post? I had not considered that.

Hmmm, now that I think of that it's actually a really good idea! I could do a blog post and use social media to get traffic to it and then offer a downloadable version in PDF format.

A blog post about it first to create a buzz and let your readers tweet and mention it on other social bookmarking sites to drive traffic to your site, maybe a reminder in your newsletter and then a few days or even two, three weeks later you can offer the PDF for download. What about a limited time offer too?

All of these ideas are really good. I don't think I want to do a limited time offer. I would love for this to spread and don't want to hinder it.

It's really unusual to meet someone that offers so much for free! I love the idea of gathering ideas from different sources, developing one ebook on the topic of how social media and bookmarking sites and the like can work in reality.

Personally I would definitely appreciate a PDF version at least so that I could easily print the content off to keep for a later date. Though a blog post would definitely be useful to attract attention toward it. Once it's up and running I'll certainly advertise it to my own contact lists.
