This is part of my 30 Days To More Traffic Series
This post is intended to cover the basics of search engine optimization. I’ve tried to include every aspect of it but it’s possible that I missed something. If I have please leave a comment below and I’ll be sure to add anything I have missed.
At the end of the post there is a section called “Search engine optimization is dying” and I recommend reading it.
What is SEO and why is it important?
SEO is an abbreviation for search engine optimization. In a nutshell SEO is about helping search engines, like Google, know what your site is about and what keywords you should rank for.
So if your website is about poodle manicures then you want your website to show up in the search results when someone searches for poodle manicures on Google.
By making small changes to your website you can dramatically increase the likelihood that you’ll show up for the search terms you desire in Google and other search engines.
Learn HTML
If you want to optimize your website for the search engines you need to take a couple hours and familiarize yourself with HTML. You don’t need to be an expert you need to understand the basics. If I talk about title tags for image tags you should know what I’m talking about.
Just search Google for HTML tutorials and you’ll find tons of free tutorials.
Blogs make it easy
If you use a blogging platform like WordPress or Blogger then much of the search engine optimization is already done for you. This saves you a lot of work and enables you to spend more time developing great content and less time writing HTML for your website.
I recommend that most everyone use a blog for their website. Without that said, it’s still a good idea to learn HTML and understand the basics.
Are You Susceptible to an SEO Scam?
Have you been tricked into forking over hundreds of dollars after being promised a top spot in the Google search engine results pages (SERPs)?
If so, you’re not alone – many online entrepreneurs, in their quest to achieve top ranking, have fallen prey to an SEO scam.
As with any industry, there are search engine optimizers who are honest, and those that aren’t.
How can you spot a fake and save your cold hard cash for other business needs?
First, get rid of your desperation.
Building your search engine optimization isn’t an overnight task and anyone promising that it’s easy is a liar – not someone who has “insider secrets.”
Aside from pie-in-the-sky speed promises, watch out for volume assurances.
If they say they’re going to submit your domain to hundreds or thousands of search engines, you’d better be asking for proof!
Submission to search engines, as any real SEO expert knows, isn’t even a part of the strategy! You have to optimize your site for findability and indexing, not force it on them.
Don’t let anyone guarantee you hundreds or thousands of backlinks in an instant, either!
If they do procure this many, there’s no doubt it will be from back alley virtual spots that Google and other search engines consider dirty – which can hurt your optimization!
Be willing to pay for good optimization – it’s not something a $39 monthly fee can cover.
Demand to know what your money’s paying for (specifically) and if they tout first page pledges for Google – RUN – because nobody can make that claim except Google, and good luck getting them to do that!
Search Engine Optimization and Keywords Overview
Search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN have complex algorithms that decide what pages will come up in search results for a given keywords phrase. We can construct content pages with SEO (search engine optimization) in mind in order to rank high in searches, leading to higher levels of SE (Search Engine) traffic.
Of course several variables are involved in SEO, but let’s talk about what’s important to cover.
Keyword Basics
Your website is most likely about a particular topic (e.g. golf swings, poodle manicures, etc.) and so the first thing to do is determine which keywords best describe the content on your page. Try to think of phrases that are specific.
It’s important that Google’s crawler realizes that your website is about the keywords you have chosen. Google does a pretty good job of determining the topic of your site but there a few things you can do assist Google’s crawler to make sure it gets things right.
Let’s say I have a website called “All things Poodles”. My keyword list would be short, only having one keyword: Poodles
My website has 4 pages:
Poodles Home
Poodle Manicures
Poodle Puppies
Poodle Breeders
Once you have a list of keywords you need to do a little research to find out who you are competing with for each keyword.
For the keyword poodle manicure I would do a search on Google and record how many pages are competing. This tells me how many pages have my keyword phrase with the words in any order.
Then I would do a phrase match search by searching on Google for “poodle manicure”. This tells me how many pages have the exact phrase.
Then I would do a title search by searching on Google for allintitle:poodle manicure. This tells me how many pages have my keyword phrase in their title.
Then I would do a url search by searching on Google for allinurl:poodle manicure. This tells me how many pages have my keyword phrase in their url.
Note: To learn more about allintitle, allinurl, and other useful operators:
http://www.google.com/help/operators.html
I would do the same thing for the keyword phrases: poodle puppies and poodle breeders.
My table would look something like this:
| Keyword | Basic Search | Phrase Search | Title Search | URL Search |
| poodle manicure | 15,000 | 8 | 6 | 1 |
| poodle puppies | 145,000 | 333,000 | 24,700 | 3,790 |
| poodle breeders | 151,000 | 49,000 | 3,840 | 1,790 |
Looking at the table above it’s clear that there is little competition for poodle manicure and a lot more competition for poodle puppies.
Optimizing your Page
Once you have your list of keywords and know a little about your competition it’s time to optimize.
Put your main keywords that describe your site in the title tag on every page.
Home
<title>Poodles | Poodles Home</title>
Poodle Manicures
<title>Poodles | Poodle Manicures</title>
Poodle Puppies
<title>Poodles | Poodle Puppies</title>
Poodle Breeders
<title>Poodles | Poodle Breeders</title>
You want your most important keywords to appear in the title with as few other characters as possible.
Do not put your keyword in the title more than 2 or 3 times. Google sees this as keyword spamming and will rank your site lower.
On each page put your main keywords in an h1 tag.
On my Poodle Manicures page you would see:
<h1>Poodle Manicures </h1>
Please note I would not target the keyword dog on my Poodle Manicures page because there are 420 million pages related to the word dog and the vast majority of people searching for dog are not looking for Poodle manicure.
There are 15,000 pages competing for poodle manicures and only 8 pages competing for “poodle manicure”.
H1 tags are reserved for top level headlines on a page. You should only use 1 or 2 top level headlines (h1 tags) on your page.
Further discussion on h1 tags:
http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/002429.html
It’s also a good idea to use h2 and h3 tags where appropriate.
Adding an alt attribute to your image tag can help as well as having your keywords be in the file name. On my Poodle manicure page I would have:
<img src=”poodle-manicures.jpg” alt=”poodle manicures” />
Read more about images and SEO
http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/03/12/formatting-images-for-seo/
I also like to put one of my keywords at the bottom of my page. This way crawlers find my important keywords at the top of my page and at the very end of the page.
It helps to have your keyword phrase in your domain name and in the file name of your page. For my Poodle Manicures page the ideal url would be http://www.Poodles.com/PoodleManicures.html
Using Robots.txt
One simple thing you can do help to website crawlers crawl your site is have a robots.txt file. This is especially important if you have sections of your website you do not want indexed by search engines.
In addition your robots.txt file can store the location of your site’s sitemap, making it easy for crawlers to find and crawl every page on your site.
“The robots exclusion standard, also known as the Robots Exclusion Protocol or robots.txt protocol is a convention to prevent cooperating web spiders and other web robots from accessing all or part of a website which is, otherwise, publicly viewable.” – WikiPedia
robots.txt files are quite simple and easy to create.
An example robots.txt file:
User-agent: *Disallow: /tmp/Disallow: /private/Sitemap: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml.gz
The first line file “User-agent: *” tells crawlers that any crawler can crawl the site.
The next 2 lines tell crawlers not to crawl anything in the tmp and private folders.
The last line tells the crawler where to find the site’s sitemap.
A robots.txt file is always found in the top level directory on your domain.
Example: http://www.example.com/robot.txt
I used to create my own robots.txt file but I recently found a site that will generate one for me for free:
http://www.mcanerin.com/EN/search-engine/robots-txt.asp
Read more about robots.txt:

How to separate keywords in your title tag
Rule #1: keep it short and avoid clutter
If your website is about “German Shepherd manicures” then you want to have those keywords in your title tag to help you rank well in the search engines.
You also want to avoid any unnecessary words in your title tag. An example of an ineffective title tag is:
The snazziest German Shepherd manicures you have ever seen in your entire freaking life, man!
When Google sees this title tag they may associate your website with words like freaking, life, man, and snazziest.
Only put the keywords you care about in your title tag.
Occasionally you have multiple sets of keywords that you want to putting your title tag. For example maybe your website is about German Shepherd manicures, Poodle manicures, and pit bull manicures. You may want to have all three sets of keywords in your title tag.
This is how I would do it:
German Shepherd Manicures | Poodle Manicures | Pit Bull Manicures
Notice how I didn’t put any extra words in my title tag. I used a vertical bar | as a separator. You can also use a hyphen or a dash as a separator.
Rule #2: make it readable
What you put in your title tag determines is what Google uses to display a link to your site in its search results.
For example, the title tag of my website is:
Nick’s Traffic Tricks — Getting Traffic Is Easy. Let Me Show You How
When you search for my website on Google you see the following:

Notice that what I put my title tag shows up in Google search results for my site. So make sure that what you put in your title tag is readable. If it does not accurately describe your website then no one is going to click on the search result.
You can have the number one spot on Google but if no one clicks on the link you are not going to get any traffic.

Search engine optimization is dying
I believe that search engine optimization will become obsolete eventually. But it’s not quite dead yet. Let me explain.
The whole point of search engine optimization is to help Google and others find out what your website is about and determine how helpful it is to people searching for information.
When search engines first started crawling the web they looked at the keywords inside of meta-tags to determine what your website was about. Unfortunately people abused this and started packing keywords into the meta-tags that had nothing to do with their website.
This practice is known as keyword stuffing and Google caught onto this. They started ignoring meta-tags and looking at keywords in other places, like the title tags, h1 tags, image tags, etc.
Once again people caught onto this and started abusing it. Google has since come up with much better ways to determine what your website is about and just as importantly how valuable it is to people.
Through tools like Google AdSense, Google Analytics, and Google Chrome they have a ton of data that tells them how valuable your website is to someone searching for a specific keyword.
If someone searches for poodle manicures Google can now track which websites this person goes to. They can track how how long a person stays on the website, how many pages they visit, and how often that person comes back. If someone comes to your website and stays a long time that indicates to Google to your website is valuable. It tells Google to keep sending people to the website.
On the other hand if someone searches for poodle manicures, goes to your website, and immediately leaves then Google will track this and not refer people in the future.
I don’t know how far Google is on implementing this but this is the direction they are going.
So as time goes on search engine optimization (i.e. having all the right keywords in the right places) will matter less and adding value to your website will matter much more
I recorded a couple short videos about this:
But it’s not dead yet
Search engine optimization is not dead for some people.
For my website Nick’s traffic tricks search engine optimization really doesn’t matter since most of my traffic comes from twitter, RSS, e-mail list, stumble upon, etc.
However for my “stop hair breakage” website search engine optimization is actually very important. Nearly all my traffic comes from people searching for “stop hair breakage” on Google.
Last month was one of the highest earning months for this website. And I expected to continue to rank well in Google.
When does search engine optimization matter?
This is the question that everyone should be asking. Sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn’t.
It matters when you have a website that is in a specific niche and you have very little competition. When there are only a few thousand websites competing with you it’s quite easy to build a niche specific website, do some basic search engine optimization, and rank high in very little time.
(In fact I show you how to do this step-by-step. Read: How 2 Hours Of Work Makes Me $100 A Month)
Niches get saturated
People find great niches with little competition all the time. But as time goes on other people find out about that same niche and build a website. Suddenly there is competition where there once was none.
Increased competition leads to niche saturation and soon the profits earned by one person have to be shared by many.
The bad news
The bad news is that if your website has a lot of competition search engine optimization will play less of a role in where your site ranks and you will have to find alternate ways of getting traffic.
Google and other search engines are getting smarter about what websites should rank high. So if you have a website with poor content that no one likes it will be increasingly difficult to have a top ranking.
The other bad news is that people are using Google less to surf the web than they used to. I personally have 7 or 8 blogs that I visit when I have some spare time. I find myself clicking the links mentioned on those blogs. I also find new things to visit via my twitter account. I seldom use Google to surf the web these days.
The good news
The good news is that search engine optimization is not that important for blogs and other community building websites. This is great news because search engine optimization was an ongoing game that took time and was a pain in the butt. And in the end I had no real control where my site ranked.
Since it doesn’t matter anymore I can spend time on more important things like:
- adding value to my e-mail list
- writing valuable e-books to go viral
- creating new products
- adding content to my blog
- increasing my twitter following
- building my RSS readership
These are the kinds of things I should’ve been doing from the very beginning instead of worrying that I had the wrong keywords in some meta tag.
Doing these things will add value to your blog, increase the number of return visitors, build confidence and trust with your visitors when you try to sell them something, and will help you go viral with social media.

What an indepth article! I always prefer to put my page keyword before my site keyword as I feel it tells google that that keyword is more important on the page.
So instead of have Poodles | Poodle Manicure, I would instead put:
Poodles Manicure | Poodles
Okay, so you put your keywords in the other order. That makes sense. In the scheme of things I wonder how much influence that small change has.
Wow nick what a huge list of ways to get index better. I have a question i made a blog 1/28/10
It is now 1/14/10, and my website has been index, google is showing some of the backlinks. The keywords are being show in the side of webmaster tools. How long should it take untill i get ranked in search results? Im trying to make 100$ a month like you did before with you other websites.
The website is my username please tell me thoughts
To start with, I think you need more content. It looks as though you only have a few pages. My stop hair breakage website has 20 or more articles related to hair breakage.
I did a Google search for the exact phrase "Weight Lifting Training". It looks like over 1 million websites are competing for this phrase. You have a lot of competition and that's going to make it difficult to rank high, especially with so little content.
If you want to make a site that makes money off of AdSense and ranks quickly then you need to pick something with less competition. Or you're going to need to build lots of back links.
Another thing you can do is build a community. But this takes time and effort on your part. You could build a community where people ask you questions about weight training and weight lifting. You could answer their questions and build a relationship of trust with them. You could have a weight training tip of the day to help people keep coming back. Once you build a community and build trust advertising is a lot easier.
One last thought is to check your Google analytics to see what pages are getting traffic already. Build more pages like those that get traffic. I would also submit your site to stumble upon, twitter, and onlywire.
Nice post Nick. This is going to be one of those that will get you traffic for a long time to come. I stumbled it to get the ball rolling.
fyi – the link to Google Fight results in a 404 error.
oops, the google fight link I was talking about was from your post (389_day-28-traffic-odds-ends), which I read immediately before this one.
Thanks for telling me the link was broken. I have fixed it now: http://nickstraffictricks.com/389_day-28-traffic-…
Thanks for the stumble.
Nice post Nick, shows that if you build it they will come doesn't hold true when it comes to building a website.
Interesting to see how the web is evolving and the number of different ways to get traffic is growing with it.
I'd be interested to know how to add the title on a wordpress template, while I can read and edit HTML the Wordpress headers and footers still look a bit alien to me.
Thanks Sean. What exactly did you mean by "add the title on a wordpress template". Are you trying to modify what shows up in the title tag?
I'm not sure if this is a good SEO technique, but you can always search for your own web pages and scroll down the results and click on your link to add a bit of relevance to your web page in the search engine rankings.
Or go a bit mad and cut and paste the actual search engine link to your web page to other sites. And even mask the actual URL with tinyURL for example.
I think 80/20 rule applies here. Of all the things you can do to help you rank high in search engines only 20% really matter. I think that the method you outlined probably falls in the other 80%. What you suggested may help you rank higher but I think there are things that will help a lot more i.e. putting your keywords in title tags, h1 tags, building back links, etc.
Very Nice Tutorial on SEO basics. downloaded Cheat sheets provided by you. They are also nice and useful.
Thank You
Great blog Nick I think I have most of my site done but not all it is going to be a ongoing thing. I know the basic html and use the proper amount of keywords per content . I am still getting articles out and building squidoos and hub pages I have a dozen or so Ezine articles. I have now been doing forum and blog back linking. I use the seo plugin on wordpress and the sociable one as well as the site map and a few others. I am getting a bit of traffic from the 2.0 sites but it's going to take time.
It does take time. Feel free to ask any questions.
"Do not put your keyword in the title more than 2 or 3 times."
Just to clarify Nick, You mean, I won't put my keyword for ex. "Poodle" 2 or 3 times?
or For ex., I have 3 keywords, dog, poodle, manicures and I shouldn't put it in my title.
I just confused Nick..hehe
Every page on your website should be focused on a single keyword term. The only exception to this might be your home page.
If you have a website about poodles then you might have sub pages like: poodle manicures, poodle training, etc.
Each sub page, like poodle manicures, should only have those keywords targeted. In the title tag I would only have poodle manicures occur once or twice.
Does that make sense?
Interesting. We can target more than one keyword for home page! Why can't we target 2 to 3 keywords for a single subpage? If all these keyword are just variations. let us say i have a subpage about car transport and i want to use.car transporters, car transport, car shipping……..all these mean the same. Can we use all these on a single sub-page. We generally want to rank high for good variations of keywords. I thought this doubt should be cleared.
Another thing …if we have started to rank well for a particular keyword over time, can we move to another keyword to make that page rank as well?
We start up with long tailed keywords to get our website noticed and rank well with less competition. Once we are getting visitors, can we shift our keyword to a little competitive search terms?
Getting your website noticed by Google is the easy part.
When you rank in Google it is for a particular keyword. If you change your keywords you may start all over in the ranking process.
All things being equal, Google will rank a page that is targeted to a single keyword higher than a sub page that has many keywords.
So it is your advantage to keep each sub page targeted to a single keyword.
Again another informative posts Nick. Your really great…:)
The SEO Cheat Sheet looks great. I'll be back with som3e questions after I've studied it.

Getting links can be tough. But I just posted something that might be helpful: http://nickstraffictricks.com/3931_huge-list-of-d…
What I see many people do with their sites is not add enough content to the site and think that with a couple articles and no pages they will rank high. It doesn't happen like that.
Unfortunately sometimes where you rank in the search engines has little to do with the quality or quantity of your content but rather it often really depends on the backlinks you have.
Nick..do you think when we look at the ranking of our website on the google SERP, it shows you accurate results for your keywords? I heard that your SERP is affected due to various reasons like ….you have signed into your google account and you are checking your SERP for keywords. In this case you rank pretty good.
Case 2: When you are using pagewash.com, your results are entirely different. Either they are very good, or very bad.
So tel me Nick, which would show us accurate results? Do we all in the world see the same SERP for a particular keyword? How should i check that my site is really coming in the top 10 list of Google? How to know if we are really on the first page. Is there any other site to know our real SERP listing?
Not everyone is going to see the same search results for a particular keyword search. The search results you see may depend on whether you were logged in to your Google account. It also can depend upon your geographic location.
So not everyone is going to see the same search results. Google also does a little bit of random shuffling of search results from time to time.
Because of all of the variables there is no "real SERP listing".
I wanted to learn about HTML and more about it and maybe web designing later on. So I could optimize my own sites without looking for some web programmer. This is cost free and ensuring the quality of the output of work I want.

Do you have the keywords How To Blog in your domain? And how many back links have you built compared to the top 10 people on Google?
I see SEO only as promotion. I can’t see how you would get rid of that – it would mean anything new, no matter how authoritative the author, would not rank. Anything old would be unmoveable.
I think that there will be a lot less opportunities to ‘promote’, as Google catches on to various techniques, but as it closes some loopholes anbd makes them black hat, so more techniques will come alive.
I think that it should be okay to do SEO, but the power of that SEO should be driven by the site’s quality – if it is rubbish content, the SEO counts for nothing, if it is good content, SEO counts. In that way, sites would have to have good content, thereby fulfilling the search engines’ main properity.
Just my 2 cents…
