Backlinks are an essential part for all the sites I personally own.

I was very surprised to see my blog jump from a Page Rank of 0 to 4 in about two months after its inception.

I got phone calls after that from marketing buddies of mine asking me how I did it, my reply: "backlinks".

It is important to mention that the listing of your article on the article directory site is good, but more important IMHO is the syndication of these articles, meaning other websites can use your content on their sites and you gain backlinks via this distribution.

Example: I have 3 articles sitting on Eza which got 72 views by potential other publishers. A backlink check I did recently revealed that about 40% of those really published my article on their sites with working backlinks. Not too bad for 4 hours of work.
