I’ve been using this service called CrazyEgg that allows me to track where people click on my blog. For the last couple days I’ve been tracking where people clicked on my homepage.
Below you can see an image which is a heat map of where people click. Blue dots represent one click and brighter dots represent multiple clicks.
In the image below I have zoomed in to the right side of page. This section has links for people to subscribe to RSS and follow me on twitter.
As you can see I’ve had 4 people click on my twitter link and 0 people click on the RSS link.
I have found similar behavior when I looked at the heat maps for other pages.
Is twitter overtaking RSS as a way for people to stay up-to-date?
For a longtime my RSS readership has been hovering around 175 to 190. My twitter following has increased during the same time from 60 followers to 390 followers.

That is really interesting. Crazy Egg looks like a fantastic tool, is it free?
I wish it were free. I think the cheapest plans start at $10 or $20 per month.
i like this article, i don't think it's overtaking, but they are both important, and it may steal some of the smaller feeds but not all of it.
I've thought about this quite a number of times. I think in due course, Twitter can leap over RSS but at the moment, it looks to be about dead even.
Till then,
Jean
Have you been able to measure any difference in the amount of traffic you get from twitter vs. rss?
Or even better, the conversion rate on your products from each source?
Good question. I haven't been able to track conversions yet. Almost all my sales come from my email list.
Yeah… definitely it is gonna happen..Now there is no webpage without twitter..It is nice question….

There is no webpage without twitter??? I don't understand what you mean.
Could be that a lot of people don't know much about RSS. And yes, Crazy Egg looks like something I have never seen before. Cheers!
