9 Ways To Get Traffic Without SEO Or Ranking In Google

This is part of my 30 Days To More Traffic Series

I frequently get questions from people asking how they can rank higher in the search engines. Many of them believe that it’s the only way to get traffic.

Today I want to show you a bunch of other ways to get traffic that have nothing to do with search engine optimization or ranking high in Google.

Cool Stuff eh..Nick. I am optimising a brand new website and I bet I should take the road less travelled and try out things other than the ones that makes Google or Yahoo happy.

Nick Stewart April 20, 2010 at 12:33 am

Don't worry about making Google or Yahoo happy. Just do whatever works best for your website and your business.

The video credits idea really works well. Most always wait for the end of the video for easter eggs or whatever, so it'll be viewed by pretty much everyone.

Till then,

I've got a vinyl sticker with my web site on the back window of my car. It's my second one. I can probably get 1 hit almost every other day. I don't count on that traffic for much. The one thing you need is a memorable URL because most people aren't going to write your URL down and will forget it by the time they get home.

As for the video on Youtube or Viddler having your web site in the last 10 seconds onscreen is a great idea. Getting this idea working for me though means I have to spend some money getting screen capture software. I like that transition you have on the end of your videos. You're using Camstudio aren't you? I wonder if Coverflow has this transition.

Reply

Nick Stewart April 21, 2010 at 12:26 am

It is very important that your URL is memorable and super easy to spell.

I use Camtasia for my videos.

>>4) Post a bumper sticker on your car<<

I put my websites name on license plate holders. Now every car in my extended family runs around with 2 short ads. These license plate holders cost much more than a bumper sticker, but they stay on the car even when it gets sold.

An other idea I tried some years ago: have the URL and a short text printed on coloured paper and place it on the inside of your cars rear side windows. Then park the car in a busy street where many people pass the car – you also get a lot of exposure in a traffic jam.

Reply

Nick Stewart April 21, 2010 at 12:31 am

That's pretty creative. Good ideas!

Wow, I would get a ton of exposure then. I'm in a traffic jam almost every single day where I live. I was in one this morning. Maybe if I have my website URL on my license plate holder I wouldn't get so bent out of shape when I'm parked on the interstate. Great idea :)

In additon to the license plate holders, I now also have ads in the rearwindow which are oversized bumper-stickers (nearly 4 feet wide, 1 foot high). Didn’t cost a fortune and works (and looks) very good.

Commenting on one of the most popular blogs in my niche with a constructive comment got me a spike in traffic and some comments to my blog.

Forum sigs are great too since most people on forums seem to be seeking advice and if you post as an expert in your niche, then they will check out your site.

Playing the expert role probably works well at places like Yahoo Answers too.

Answering peoples questions on forums is a fantastic way to get traffic. But it takes a little bit of time to establish yourself status as an expert in your field and for people to trust you.

Reply

Ryan April 21, 2010 at 2:13 am

Commenting is a good way to get traffic. Lately, I've noticed that some people take forever to approve your comments especially the dofollow ones. Except for Nick. Comments get approved right away. Thanks, Nick. And you're dofollow too.

Now if I could only find out where people backlink their articles to 100's of places like some people say they do at the WForums.

I would agree with youtube and viddler, viddler will pay you for videos also once you average a certain # of visits per month. I use you tube to generate traffice to my sites all the time. Some times I pay for the "promote your video" and I will just put a couple of bucks down for marketing but the real purpose is so that I can get the call to action button on there. It's kind of my sneaky way of getting a link on the video.

All good stuff. Have to agree my experience with PPC hasn't been great. But it is a good way to fill in the gaps.

YouTube is something I'm really working on at present. Serves a couple of purposes: gets the URL out there, shows our product and I hope provides value — otherwise why watch! But then you have to promote your YouTube channels also!

Did you ever make a comparison of Google/non-Google traffic regarding conversion?

I have often seen that people using second tier SEs (also from Y! and Bing) convert better.

Reply

Nick Stewart June 16, 2010 at 1:37 am

I don't know if other search engines convert better or not. I suppose that it's possible but it would probably be different for each niche. In my experience it's far easier to rank in one search engine than others for a given keyword phrase.

For example my blog here gets 10 times as much traffic from Google as every other search engine combined. I have a website with famous quotations and it gets 10 times as much traffic from Yahoo as every other search engine.

This is a great video post. You are right about you tube. You can also get more traffic by going to popular videos and do video responses, usually there are not many of them so it helps.

LoneWolf August 9, 2010 at 7:05 am

The nice thing about many of these techniques is that they also have a side effect of building your SEO. Now we just need to figure out how to ping the search engines when you put the bumper sticker on your car 8=)

Number 1 way to get site traffic without ranking: Create a fake craigslist ad targeting whatever service you want to market to. If you sell plumbing tools, then post an ad that you need a plummer. Do this 50 times over the course of 100 days (one time every 2 days in each state). You will have tons of email addresses for people that are in your target market! Voila! Kind of shady, but if you're asking about how to get traffic without ranking, that's it!

In case you're wondering, I haven't done this, but I did think of it last night. What do you think?

Reply

Nick Stewart March 4, 2011 at 2:00 am

Stuff like that used to work really well but craigslist has been cracking down on spammers. I think instead we should look for legitimate ways to reach our target audience.

Sometimes you tube videos are easier to rank with search engine optimization than normal pages. People can also embed your YouTube videos in their site. And you can have YouTube videos link to each other.

Hi! I really appreciate all these good tips for online success.
I noticed, as well, that it is not an overnight thing, and it really takes a lot of dedication and belief to keep doing something that doesn’t bring obvious results, at least not in the beginning. But as with all things in life, if you keep in doing it, you get better at it, and you get closer to success step by step. My motto is that I don’t do things that would annoy me from other companies, so flashing and beeping banners on my own site are out of the question, but all these SEO techniques you mention, and building relationships and contacts, I find really useful. I like the car sticker idea I read in one of the comments, too!
I wish all of you a lot of success, and thank you for keeping up the flow of information with your blogs!
Best regards,
Leonard
