More and more people report a yoyo effect with google,
and I am facing these too:
One day, you have 50 pages ranking nicely on a site
The next day, suddenly these 50 pages rank >500 (all
simulatenously), even for ‘ultra simple’ long tail
keywordsOnce in a while, 50 pages rank again nicely (usually
not the same as previous)One of my site faces this yoyo effect with traffic
oscillating between almost zero and 1000 visitors per
dayIt is a kind of sandbox effet, but historically, the
sandbox was doing that only a couple (page+keyword)This phenomenon is reported more and more often in
forums, but nobody seems to have a solutionAny idea both to prevent and correct ?

Hello,
This is a common problem and the most common suggestion is to make sure you go through a basic search engine optimization of your site.
I put together an SEO checklist at the bottom of:
http://www.nickstraffictricks.com/search-engine-optimization-and-keywords/
SEO will only get you so far but there are additional things you can do to lesson the impact of this yoyo effect and get more traffic to your site.
First, work on getting more people to link to your site. This is not done overnight but if you systematically build backlinks to your site over time it will greatly decrease the yoyo effect.
Build relationships with other webmasters and exchange links with them.
You can quickly find other site owners interested in exchanging links at:
http://www.linkmarket.com/
This takes people a lot of time but is well worth it. Consider paying someone to do this for you.
Second, give people a reason to bookmark your site and come back to it. Give your visitors regularly updated content, news, polls, etc.
This helps you get traffic and repeat visitors even when Google kills all of your pages’ rankings.
Third, utilize social bookmarking services like Digg, Delicious, and StumbleUpon. These places can drive tons of traffic to your site especially if you have content that is interesting or noteworthy.
Fourth, write an informative ebook or report and give it away for free. If your report is really good, it can spread virally.
In the ebook have a link to your site at the top of every page.
Hope this helps!

One thing I learned is that if you have a blog, it’s always better to increase your blog RSS subscribers than leaving traffic in the mercy of Google. I’m not exactly the expert on this but I really found that tip very helpful in my own online efforts.
