Sometimes it is the little things that count. I have to keep reminding myself to get up and stretch…which also helps the productivity, especially around siesta time!

I find it useful to stand up and walk around every hour or so. Helps me to stay focused.

Speaking of distractions, did you notice the date stamp for David Leonhardts comment? When I read this it was 17 months before Nick wrote this post!!!

I often have to ask myself, When exactly, would “now” be the right time to start taking action? (I do not know who originated that quote)

Cheers
Scott

The first hurdle I had to overcome to avoid distractions was actually recognising I was getting distracted from what I had set out to acheive, once I started planning my goals and objectives and reviewing where I had spent my time at the end of the day I found it much easier to stay focussed.

Good point. Acknowledge that you have a problem is the first step.

Hi Nick – a funny post, but true nonetheless. However I have to disagree with you – mosquitos are far, far worse than flies – I can’t rest until I’ve mashed the evil critters into oblivion!
The suggestion of headphones in the office is a good one, and although it might seem counter-intuitive (music=distraction) I find I get far more done with less background noise. An added bonus is that colleagues think twice before interrupting you as well!

Finding the right music is key to headphones use. I also use headphones that fit over the ear which after extended wear can leave your hair kinda messy.

“mosquitos are far, far worse than flies”

Ohhh yeah :-( anyone of you notices this when your near sleeping and then such a *** *** *** bites you directly into your ear? I hate it and if I could I would kill all mosquitos all over the world :-D .

The distraction thing is really true – since I’am cleaning my desk every morning before I’ll start making web stuff I’am much faster. Also keeping Skype/ICQ offline helps MUCH.

Hey Nick,

Nice funny story to get your point across as to how easy it is to get distracted. It happens to all of us whether we want to admit it or not. It’s amazing how easy it is to read one email and click a link to another website and before you know it you’re suffering from “clickitis” (new word) and one hour has passed and you’ve done nothing.

Bottom line, shut down your email while you’re working. I try to only read emails first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Later,
Jeff Sargent

I unfortunately suffer from clickitis. I have wasted a lot of time on the net.
