Last month an odd thing happened. A new traffic generating scheme traveled across my desk. The actual details don’t matter as much as the events that took place. The point of joining this particular program was to increase one’s Adsense revenue by moving your Google Ads in front of a larger audience. Woo hoo. It worked – for a brief while and it was nice to see the increased revenue.
As the program crashed and burned, a strange thought appeared on the stage in this great play called Making Money Online. I just had a glimpse of a solid income through Google Ads and a sense of how many hits my ads were getting. Since normally the hits that affected my ads would be on my site, it was a strange sort of sensation to see that more than a million people saw the ads in a very short time.
The strange thought was, this is like the Secret, where you visualize what you want and focus on that visualization until it becomes a reality. Because there was resistance in my mind (or so I deduced) I had to be taken by the hand and shown the result of a million visitors to my site. This, the universe was saying, is what happens when you have a million visitors.
Sure I get a lot of visitors, but not a million a day or even a million a week. But imagine if I did. Based on the traffic I get, I could extrapolate the figures and know what it would be in terms of dollars if I did. The trick to getting more traffic is thinking seriously about getting traffic. Not just flailing around and trying this trick and that trick but setting your sites on a goal and working towards that. Don’t do just one thing and expect it to work. Focus all your energy into getting traffic.
Have a plan. Do not keep on looking for the magic single trick. The magic single trick is that there is no one single thing that will do it for you. You have to pull all the approaches together and make them work together.
It may be startling to think of it this way but what you do in building traffic is not as important as just doing it. Do not run from article marketing to press releases to forum posting to link sharing and expect it to work. Start with one and get that rhythm going and then start the next method and get it going but keep at the first one as well. It will be time consuming but keep on adding a new technique while keeping the existing methods in place.
I kid you not – the secret to success is focus and dedication and you have to believe in the end result. For me it took the actual sight of more than a million hits on my Adsense pages to see that it is possible to make tons of money. Whatever you need to do to get it into your head that the devotion of time to your online business is more than worth it, do it. Write yourself a check dated this time next year. Write yourself a bit note and post it over your computer. Tell your father. Do whatever but do it.
