Have been using this Wordpress plugin for a while now. It's one of the plugins I install on every single site.
It does not only create a sitemap for you but also notifies Google, Bing and Ask.com. You can set the importance of different pages so the search engines what to crawl more often.

I have been using this plugin for a while and have never had any errors with my sitemap, pages are normally indexed within the same day.
Can't use this model myself, since I'm Drupal-based, but can vouch for the need and usefulness of uploading your site maps to Google, Yahoo! and Bing.
It doesn't guarantee that they will all be indexed, but it at least makes sure that Google knows about them.
I do soemthing similar with my Blog's RSS feed also.
Good plug in page, it helps too see it in action as well as words.

Let’s face it, none of the search engines will always play ball and list your pages when you think thay should, but by using this plugin you can be pretty sure that there is nothing in your site structure which is preventing Google, and the other engines, from crawling and listing your pages.
