Nick's Traffic Tricks

I Just Moved My Blog From BlueHost To GoDaddy (What A Pain!)

A few months ago I started noticing that my blog was taking a long time to load some of the pages. Occasionally my blog would go down completely and be unavailable for short periods of time.

When I would contact my host (BlueHost) they always said they were aware of the situation and would have it fixed in a jiffy, which they usually did. But the slowness never went away.

This bothered me but I figured switching to another host would be too big of a pain.

Script to check slowness

I wanted to be sure that my site really was slow and that it wasn’t just my imagination or my Internet connection.

So I wrote a short Ruby script that would periodically download my home page and record how long it took. It would also download the home pages of two other popular blogs and record how long they took.  (You can download the script here.)

The script confirmed what I feared. My site was frequently slow and occasionally unavailable.

Yesterday things got really bad

Yesterday my host was having serious issues. I was unable to save new blog posts or modify plug-in settings.

I knew the time had come to change web hosts.

Unfortunately changing is a royal pain. I think I have everything converted over except that the order handling for my 177 traffic videos is not quite working yet. I hope to have this working this weekend.

If you find anything that doesn’t work please let me know. My blog has hundreds of posts, images, and other miscellaneous items and it’s very possible that I missed something.

Good luck with the move – until now itlooks quite good and load time is ok.

What do we have to do to run the script? Downloading is easy, but what follows then?

Have a good weekend despite the work :)

Ruby is a programming language and you have to have it installed on your computer to run the ruby script I wrote: http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/

Best of luck, Nick. I moved mine in February from a small-name host to Host Gator. Thankfully, they took care of everything. It was all moved over without incident within a few hours. I wish you the same. (Lesson learned on my part)

Hope the move goes well. Switching to GoDaddy.com is a great choice and should be worth the hassle of moving the site.

Sorry to her about the pain and trouble from moving to another host. Hopefully the move fixes and further issues you've been having with load times and downtime. If I see any trouble I'll be sure to shoot you an email.

Till then,

Jean
