Video: Is This SEO Tactic Dead?

We all know SEO is constantly evolving.  I am beginning to think this SEO tactic is pretty much dead.

Maybe…maybe not. Everyone I have spoken with, myself included, are not fans of Google Instant. It makes the search experience awful. It is trying to guess what you're thinking. Everything is jumping all over the place. It is entirely too distracting. Most have turned it off, or resorted to using their Google Toolbar to avoid it. I hope this is one more of Google's recent "improvements" that will go by the wayside. :)

I don't use this tactic, but I think it will still be available to those that want to. People want a quick search, they don't want to take the time to look at what Google is suggesting, scroll down, enter/click, maybe type a little more to see what else Google thinks you want, etc. That takes more time than to just finish typing your search.

Great thoughts Angie. I will try turning it off.

I don't think it is dead just yet. Like Angie said, people don't really like how google does that. It would an interesting thing to test.

I would love to see some survey results.

If this isn't dead it should be. Two reasons come to mind.

First: In my opinion it is not ethical.

Second: Who wants to buy products, sign up to a blog, from an affiliate, or webmaster that cannot spell?

This practice of deceit reminds me of the old time snake oil salesman. I want to add this is just my opinion and I am sure many will disagree with my view and that is OK.

As marketers and owners we should always hold our self to the highest ethical integrity. When you work on the Internet you place your reputation, and ethics out front for the entire world to view.

We only have one opportunity to make a good first impression! After all this being said I hope all my spelling is correct in this post! lol.

Respectfully,

Peggy

Good points. Having poor spelling or poor grammar will kill your credibility faster than just about anything.

For fun, I ran your comment through my spellchecker and everything looks good except that it didn't understand what lol was. :)

I think Google's Instant search will certainly curtail these sort of tactics to some degree for sure. Then again, I know many people who've turned off the feature from day one itself, lol.. so they might still be susceptible to said tactics. But at the end of the day, it's dishonest and like Peggy said, will hurt your reputation in the long run.

Good points. I think I will do a survey to see what people think of Google instant search.

Google Instant will not go away (even if you want it to). It is saving them loads of server time and helping drive up the cost of PPC (money they make) for base terms.

The tactic you mention may still survive however… just because it suggests other spellings below, if there is enough traffic for a mis-spelling, then it will still suggest that.

As far as ethics… I am an ethical person (that does SEO & VSEO), but I see no problem with the ethics of this tactic. People just don't spell well, and if you can take advantage of that, and have the proper spelling in the article somewhere, I'm sure you will be forgiven by the searcher (in case they even care).

With the onset of mobile texting devices, I c spelling getting far worse soon!

Is it really saving them server time. I thought it would be costing them more.

From the various articles I've read they save fractions of a second on each search … and because of their humongous volume that adds up to be quite a bit of savings.
