Nick's Traffic Tricks

How To Rank #1 In Google

There is a ton of bad information on the Internet about how to rank high in Google. And the worst part is that some people are paying big bucks for garbage information.

Today I’m going to show you how to take a brand-new website and get it indexed by Google and eventually rank #1 in Google.  And I will do it for free.

None of the steps involved are difficult to understand but I must warn you that there is a ton of ground to cover.

Where to start

Everyday people search the Internet for solutions to their problems.  Your quest for a top ranking in Google begins with knowing exactly what problem your website solves.

And you should be able to explain the problem that your website solves in 1 sentence.

Example: Nick’s Traffic Tricks show you how to get more traffic to your site.

Example: Bob’s website shows you how to get your poodle to stop peeing on your Persian rugs.

Example: Jim’s website shows you how to win a llama spitting contest.

If you don’t know what problem your website solves then you are in trouble, and all the keyword research & search engine optimization in the world won’t help.

A quick word about advertising

Most of you want to rank high in Google so you can get more traffic and ultimately make more sales. And knowing exactly what problem that your website solves will make it 100 times easier to find targeted and high converting advertisements for your site.

Generate a keyword list

You need to generate a list of keywords and keyword phrases that best describe the types of searches that your target audience will be typing into Google.

For example, if your site is about how to jump higher then your list may include:

  • jump
  • jumping
  • jump higher
  • jump height
  • increase jump
  • maximize jump

Try to come up with 4 to 10 keywords or phrases for your list.

You might also use an online thesaurus to come up with synonyms for your keywords.

Don’t worry if your list is not very long. In the next section I will show you a tool to generate a ton more keywords.

Keyword research part 1

Once you have a list keywords that you would like to possibly rank for it’s time to do some keyword research using Google’s free keyword research tool.

It’s very easy to use and I recommend sorting your search results by Global Monthly Search Volume. And what you’re looking for are relevant keywords that have the highest number of searches.

I made a quick video showing you exactly how to do this:
Keyword Research Part 1: Finding keywords with lots of searches

Keyword research part 2

In this phase of keyword research we want to determine how valuable different keywords are.

For example, if I had a website about dogs I would probably find that keywords related to stop barking dogs would be more valuable than keywords like dog tap dance lessons.

How to actually do this research is best explained in a video that I made:
Keyword Research Part 2: Finding keywords that are profitable

Keyword research part 3

The last step in your keyword research is to determine how much competition each keyword has.

Using the Google keyword tool you want to determine how many websites are competing for each keyword in your list.

The easiest way to explain how to do this is with a video I made:
Keyword Research Part 3: Evaluating Keyword Competition

Keyword research conclusion

In summary the keywords that you select for your website should match ALL of the following 4 criteria:

  1. Keyword is related to your target audience
  2. Keyword has enough searches each month to make it worth your time
  3. Keyword is valuable enough
  4. Keyword has an amount of competition that you are comfortable with

I did an experiment

A while back I did an experiment to see how fast I could rank for a silly keyword that had virtually no competition.

So I made a blog post with the title Biggest Absolute Failure. I knew that my blog platform would put the keyword phrase Biggest Absolute Failure in all the right places and I waited to see how long it would take Google to rank me for that particular keyword.

When I checked my rankings a couple hours later I was surprised to find that Google had ranked my blog post #1 for Biggest Absolute Failure.

I was excited about this but quickly realized that ranking for this keyword didn’t help me get targeted traffic. The phrase Biggest Absolute Failure wasn’t relevant to my niche, it wasn’t valuable, and no one was searching for it.

So when striving to rank high in Google make sure you are selecting keywords that match the 4 criteria in the list above.

Finding balance

Most likely you are not going to find the perfect keyword with tons of searches and no competition. Instead you’re going to have to find a balance between these things.

Avoid vague keywords

A lot of people want to rank for the keyword computers or real estate or dogs. The trouble with these keywords is that they are super competitive and you really have no idea what a person is really searching for.

For example, if someone searches for computers they might be looking for:

  • parts for computers
  • buy computers
  • computer repair shops in St. Louis
  • computer programming languages
  • the history of computers
  • news about computers
  • schools and classes about computers
  • movies about computers

Each of these terms has a very different audience and you have no idea what someone is really looking.  So do yourself a favor and avoid vague keywords.

I covered this in more detail in:
2 Reasons Your Keywords Suck (And How To Fix Them)

But Nick, all this keyword research stuff sounds hard and time-consuming. I just want to rank high in Google and think about this stuff later.

Figuring out what problem your website solves and keyword research are the 2 most difficult things you will do to rank high in Google.

But they are the most important!

The domain that you purchase for your website will depend entirely on the keywords that you choose. If you skip keyword research you will buy the wrong domain and it will make it far more difficult to rank high.

Websites don’t just rank high in Google; they rank high for a specific keyword phrase. So make sure you rank high for the right keyword phrases.

More tools and resources

There are tons of keyword research tools and tutorials available to you that I did not cover in this post. To learn more about keyword research go check out Keyword Research 101.

Buy the right domain

Once you figure out what you’re ideal keyword is you need to get the domain that has those keywords in it.

For example if your target keyword phrase is
how to train hippopotamus ballerinas then ideally you would purchase the domain HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com.

Sometimes your ideal domain is taken so you may have to put dashes in between words. Another option is to put a filler word at the beginning or the end of your domain.

For example, if HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com was not available you might try

  • LearnHowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com
  • A1HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com
  • BestHowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com

Get a .com

Whenever possible you should buy the .com. In my experience domains that end with .com or .org or .net rank better in Google and get more traffic.

I favor .com domains over .org & .net because of word-of-mouth marketing. For example, if I have a friend who wants to train his hippopotamus to be a ballerina I will refer him to my site HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas and he will usually assume that it is a .com.  If instead my website is HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.org my friend has to remember one more thing about my website and is likely to forget that my domain ends in .org.

Learn more about picking the right domain:
Do You Have The Wrong Domain? 4 Tips For Choosing The Best Domain

But Nick, I already spent $10 on a domain. Do I really have to get a different one to rank in Google?

No you don’t, but it will be a lot harder to rank high with a crappy domain.

It’s kind of like running a marathon and asking, “If someone tied my hands behind my back would I still be able to complete the marathon?’  You could, in theory, still finish it but running a marathon is hard enough without any extra handicaps.

And ranking high in Google is a lot like running a marathon; it takes time, effort, and preparation.  Why would you want to make this even harder?

Search engine optimization

Just about everyone has heard about search engine optimization by now. So I am going to skip the nitty-gritty details and just go over a few highlights.

Search engine optimization can be broken into 3 basic components:

  1. Keyword research
This was covered at great length in the above sections.
  2. On page optimization
You want your keyword phrase in your domain as well as your title tags, h1 tags, etc. (If any of this is new to you then go read Your Grandma’s Guide To Search Engine Optimization and Keywords)
  3. Back link building
You need to have other websites link to your website because each link is like a vote. And the more votes you get the better. We will go more in depth into this in a later section.

You really need a blog

Putting your keywords in your title tags, h1 tags, etc. is tedious and a pain. Luckily there’s a simple solution: use a blog!

Blogging platforms like WordPress and others have come a long way and basically do all of the on-site optimization for you.

Back link building

Most of you are ready know why building links to your website is important so I won’t spend too much time on it here but instead I’m going to give you 4 resources to check out if you are new to link building:

One powerful way to get links is by leaving worthwhile comments on dofollow blogs. But these blogs are a pain to find so I made a list of them here:  Huge List Of DoFollow Blogs

There is another strategy that involves you becoming the top commentator on popular blogs to get more links, so check out How To Build Back Links Super Fast

Some of you use article marketing to build your back links. While I’m not a huge fan of article marketing there are a few resources that you should check out:

You can also get a free back link from me here.

You should spy on your competition

Do a quick search on Google for the keyword phrase you would like to rank #1 for and count how many back links each of the top 10 websites have.

The back link count for each website will vary but it should give you an idea of how many back links you will need to rank in the top 10.

The real way to build tons of back links

Most people build a website and generate content that is mediocre. And they spend most of their time trying to con, convince, and conjole other websites into giving them a link.

But they are doing it backwards.

The best way to build lots of back links is to generate freaking awesome content. If what you post is absolutely epic in nature then people will link to you because they love your stuff.

Get your website indexed by Google

Before you can get your website ranked high in Google you first have to get Google to notice your website even exists. This is generally a pretty simple and straightforward process.

The simplest way is to build a few back links to your website. You can generally do this by leaving worthwhile comments on other blogs that support nofollow. (What’s NoFollow?)

  6. Video: Why does Google index blogs faster than other sites?

Google Analytics

You really need to use Google analytics (or some other stat tracking software) to monitor how much traffic you get.

One of the best things about Google analytics is that it will show you how much traffic you are receiving for various keywords. And some keywords will end up sending you way more traffic than others. Your job is to figure out which keywords those are and then build more back links for those keywords.

Unfortunately most people using Google analytics don’t have the faintest idea how to analyze the data and use it to get more traffic. To help you  get the most out of Google analytics I’ve made several video tutorials:

Ranking in other search engines

95% of everything covered in this blog post will help you rank in other search engines like Bing and Yahoo.

There are some minor things you could do to help you rank even higher in those search engines but I’m not exactly sure what those things are offhand.  And to be honest, it’s probably not worth your time.

Special thanks

Special thanks go to Corbett Barr of Think Traffic for encouraging me to write something epic.

This is a topic many people are very interested and you covered very nicely and with many details, thanks for the helpful information.

Your site deserves to be on the first page of Google, not only for traffic tricks, but hopefully for other keywords as well.

Absolutely Nick, ranking #1 on Google for "traffic" related keywords is a great step to take. This is because, it's selling like hot cake and so many sites are going live every second.

They need ready made traffic and since you are ABOVE, your conversion rate would soar. I'm currently ranking #3 for a decent "web traffic" keyword and there is no single day I don't make 3 sales.

I don't think your domain needs to include keywords. Aren't you supposed to make a site for humans, not search engines? As such, your domain needs to be easy to remember. Seriously, who will remember (and type correctly!) HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com? A much better name would be hippo.com

Reply

Nick Stewart February 6, 2011 at 8:31 am

I agree that your website should be designed for humans.

But if your goal is to rank high in Google (which is the point of this post) then having your keywords in your domain will make a world of difference.

If you don't care about your Google ranking then there is no need to have your keywords in your domain.

And your point about HowToTrainHippopotamusBallerinas.com is valid; it's too long and silly. I probably could've come up with a better example.

It just depends though Robert, if you are going for a branding deal, then yeah you should go outside of the keyword in the domain, but for most websites having the keywords in the domain name is ideal, and especially getting a dot com. Just gotta use common sense though when creating the domain name :)

It's almost sad that there are some people like in your example, who rush to buy their domain without thinking through it as a deliberate process that needs to be done in a specific way, and then later they say, "I already got a domain, why should I pay for another one?"

If correcting a mistake in business costs $15 or less, that's truly a very good deal, but some people do not realize the importance.

Nick, do you think that backlinks from quality websites really help in ranking on SERP? I thought backlinks from good PR sites help in getting Page rank to your site other than indexing. When I get few good backlinks from quality sites, I find a shift in my site ranking on Google. It starts ranking on first page…!

When you get backlinks from good PR sites-your site comes up on Serp…though it may not have PR at all….With few good backlinks I find a major shift in my site ranking. How its possible?

Reply

In nearly every case back links will help your site rank higher in the search engines. Back links from high page rank sites will help even more.

To be honest, I don't really worry about the page rank of my sites anymore because I don't think it really matters. I have sites with a page rank of zero or one showing up on the first page of Google because they're in a niche that doesn't have a lot of competition.

I have spent a lot of time on SEO the last couple years to watch its effectiveness start to dwindle. It is still one of the best ways for me to get targeted traffic. But when you consider the cost of your time to learn and use SEO tactics compared to the new techniques that you could be using that build actual relationships and trust with your customers it only makes sense that SEO will be less important over the next couple of years.

WOW, Nick!

I have spent the last hour lurking around….lots of great content.

I have 2 questions:

I used to have Angelas backlinks (I see that you're promoting her product, thus my question) but I noticed that only 24 hours later after releasing the list, most of the places were already deleting/or not allowing the comments/posts anymore, due to spammers.

Even with the PDF locked system that she implemented we got the same problem, that's why I canceled my subscription.

1)Does she created a better way to get rid of the spammers that use her list?

2)I'm interested in buying the Fast Attack SEO – WSO

What make this report better than others?

Best Regards,

Mariana Teagan

Hi Mariana,

> 1)Does she created a better way to get rid of the spammers that use her list?

I never experienced this problem when I was using her back link packets a while back. Is this problem relatively new? Have you e-mailed Angela about it?

> 2)I’m interested in buying the Fast Attack SEO – WSO
> What make this report better than others?

It's probably the most comprehensive search engine optimization guide I've seen and one of the cheapest. I will be posting a review of it in a couple days.

Hi. Nick

Thanks for replying :)

I stopped using her package around July (I think) last year.

Yes I emailed her and I waited 2 months before canceling my subscription. Maybe now she got a "tight security" on that?

I'm buying this Seo report (from your link :) ) right now!

Best Regards,

Mariana

For me it just gave me a blueprint to follow for my ultimate goal. Its better than most of the products, etc I've bought.

Hi, Nick

I just stopped by to say "thank you" for this great WSO written by Craig Mako. :)

For everyone reading this, check out the first blue link at the top of this page…it will sends you to the Warrior Forum and its WSO…It's truly a MUST have it!

I'm using the backlink indexer service suggested in the pdf and I'm loving it…..however, I noticed that the forum profiles links are hard to get indexed. What do you use to index your links? Are you having the same problem with the url's from forums?

I'm giving Angela's backlinks another try, too – thanks to you :)

Cheers,

Mariana

Getting your links indexed can be tricky. There's a new product on the market that I will begin testing tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes.

Well to be honest Google always places high attention on sites that are linked by high PR Domains so ranking number 1 in Google search requires 20 backlinks from at least pr 7+ different websites

I like the part where you talk about getting links because I still feel that links are the one part of the equation that will help you beat a competitor for a better position. Without enough link juice you won’t get the results you want.

About one full year ago I signed up here Nick as a subscriber to your site. At that time, my online portfolio consisted of my original website (a first page/top rank site) and my then-brand-newly released second site.

Thanks at least in part to the information I have learned here (and some other sources), my online portfolio has increased tremendously to now over 20 sites.

Some are adsense sites, some are mini-sites made for local search, some are specifically to promote an affiliate product.

The goal with all of them is Top Search Engine rankings and thus free traffic.

Thanks again for all I have learned from you over the past about one year, I am pleased to report to you in all humbleness and modesty that I am now blessed that my first three websites are all top ranked (the first 2 on page one, the third between positions 9-15 on Bing), some of my free sites are top ranked (at least one each on blogspot dot com and wordpress dot com, and 3 or 4 of my local search sites [Example: barber in dallas] also are top ranked in Google and or Bing. I had considered asking if you may be interested in a guest post about this from a devoted fan/subscriber/reader.
