Getting followers on Twitter is actually very easy.
Converting them to get traffic, sell stuff, and build an email list is easy.
So let’s get down to business.
Step one: Signing up
Sign up for Twitter and set up your profile, if you have not done so already. If you have already set up a Twitter profile and optimized your profile then proceed to step two.
Setting up your Twitter profile
Before you set up your Twitter profile it’s important to consider what niche you are going to be in.
For example, if your niche is portal manicures then try to get a Twitter user name of poodle_manicures or something like that. It’s best to try to get a username that matches your niche.
Another option is to establish yourself as an expert with your Twitter username.
For example, you could use poodle_guru or poodle_master. I think you get the idea here.
Once you have you were account set up there are a couple things you need to do.
Fill out the short online bio.
It’s also very important that you upload a real photograph of yourself to your Twitter account.
People will be a long more likely to follow you if they believe that you are a real person. Showing them an actual photograph of you helps establish this.
Step two: Tweet about things that are relevant to your niche
Now that your Twitter account is all set up its importance that you’ve had several updates to your account or tweets as we may call them. And it’s important that they have occurred recently.
You should tweet about 10 to 20 things related specifically to your niche. Make sure the things that you tweet about are things that people in your niche will be interested in and find useful.
When people are deciding whether or not to follow you often they will look at your online profile and see what kinds of things you have tweeted about in the past.
Step three: Get Followers
Find someone in your niche that has a lots of Twitter followers. It’s very important that they are in the same niche as you.
The people following this person are interested in their niche most likely and that’s why they are following this person.
For example, if my niche is poodle manicures I would look for someone in the same niche that has a lot of Twitter followers.
Now let’s say that I found someone, named John, and he was in my niche and had a thousand followers.
Now what I would do is go look at the list of all of John’s followers and choose to follow 1000 of them.
One thing you need to know is that on Twitter when you follow someone about half the time or sometimes more that person will reciprocate and follow you back.
So if you decide to follow 1000 people on Twitter I’m guessing at about half or sometimes more will follow you back.
If you have a decent Internet connection it should take you approximately 2-3 hours to follow 1000 people. Within a few days you should get about half of these people, 500, to follow you back.
From this minimal amount of work you should get 500 followers. Not too shabby!
If you want a thousand followers then you need to go follow closer to 2000 people and this will take you three to six hours to do.
Now I must warn you not to get too greedy to fast. The Twitter has found out about this and will penalize and in some cases cancel the account of anyone that they think is abusing the system.
I personally recommend following about a thousand people and then waiting a week or so until the number of followers you have has increased to 500 or so.
I have read that Twitter enforces some sort of hard limit around the 2000 mark. Once you have followed about 2000 people they start putting limits on how many people you can follow if the number of followers you have is significantly less than 2000.

This is all you need to do to get your followers.
It takes time but it’s well worth it. Just don’t get greedy.
Step four: Boost your Following
There are several other small things you can do to help boost your Twitter following.
They are:
• Put a link to your Twitter profile in forum signatures.
• Link or the URL to your Twitter profile at the bottom of every e-mail you send, in signature portion.
• Use services like Twitter counter and post your Twitter following on your blog or website. It’s very easy to use and set up. You can see mine here:

• Consider even putting your Twitter URL on your business cards.
Step five: How to monetize your followers
Now that you have a reasonable number of Twitter followers you may be asking, “Well what’s the point of all of this? How does it help me grow my business, get traffic, and make money?”
In this section I’m going to answer that.
When I first started experimenting with Twitter I had the same question.
With about 3 hours of work I had followed roughly 1700 people in my niche and had about 900 people following as a consequence. At first to be honest, I was ecstatic. I thought this was so cool! I have like a zillion followers and hadn’t take me any work really at all.
And then reality set in.
How is this going to help me?
So I decided to run some experiments.
My blog is in the Internet marketing niche in my followers are in that same niche for the most part.
Every day I try to update my blog with some new or interesting bit of information. So I thought why not tweet about my new blog updates.
And this is what I did.
Every day when I posted something new on my blog and would tweet about it. I would also occasionally tweet about other peoples blog posts that were relevant to my niche.
Just as a quick side note, it’s good to tweet about other people’s things and not just yours. You need to maintain an image that you are interested in providing real and valuable content and not just promoting your own crap. Just make sure that when you tweet about different things and your own content, you should tweet about your own content at the very end, your last tweet.
The last thing you tweet about shows up at the top of all of your tweet and so you want that to be the the tweet about something on your own site.
So anyway, I did this every day for about two weeks.
Every day when I would tweet about something I would get people coming to my site within seconds. It wasn’t a huge flood of traffic but it was consistent.
So every day I would post to my blog and get free traffic. Posting to my blog was something I was going to do anyway.
Getting free traffic every day from Twitter was just icing on the cake.
So Twitter is a great way to get traffic to your site or blog.
But here’s the kicker: you must tweak about stuff that is relevant to your followers, stuff they actually care about.
If you tweet about garbage people will unfollow you very quickly and then you’ll have nothing.
With this new found source of traffic to my website I had opportunities to advertise to these people and entice them to sign up to my e-mail list.
Looking out my statistics for my e-mail list, I saw a definite increase in the number of people that had signed up. This is due to my tweets about my new blog postings.
As part of my experiment I offered to stumble peoples websites for free if they left a comment with their URLs on my blog post.
As a side note, I’m still offering this and you can get free stumbles by going to:

And so I tweeted about this too three or four times over the course of two weeks.
And when I started I was a little nervous that people would not want to continue following me if I was primarily tweeting about my own stuff.
But this was an experiment so I did it anyway.
To my surprise, the number of people following me actually grew!
By 20 new followers each day, every day for two weeks.
And it’s still growing!
Two weeks and one day after I followed my initial set of people and had 900 followers, I had roughly 1300 followers.
Tweeting about my blog posts each day and stumbling the peoples sites and URLs that people at had submitted took me a grand total of about three hours spread over a two-week period.
It didn’t take very long and I grew my followers from 900 two 1300. Again, not too shabby.
As the number of followers I have grows, the amount I of traffic I get also grows.
And the number of new people subscribing to my e-mail list grows also.
I believe that if you really want to create a long-term business with lasting profits you need to have some sort of e-mail list and this has helped me accelerate the rate at which I grow my list.
Resources
I recommend using tweetburner to track how many people click on your links that you tweet about:

I also recommend using TwitterFox for Firefox:

Here is a great WordPress plugin that makes it easy for people to retweet your blog posts:

Conclusion
I have shown you step-by-step how I went from almost no followers on Twitter to 1300 and still growing with little effort on my part.
There is nothing that I have done that cannot be replicated by you.
You can do everything I did and it won’t take you longer. It’s easy.
Just provide quality content and people will continue following you and the number of followers you have will grow.
