Posting short videos on YouTube can be a great way to get traffic.

Unfortunately most videos don’t get more than 20 views, which is definitely not worth the time spent to create a video.

So the trick is to figure out which kinds of videos get loads of views.

2010 was a big year for viral videos on YouTube.

And while these videos are fun to watch I think there’s something we can learn about traffic generation.

REELSEO has done a quick analysis of this year’s most popular videos and included a list of what the most popular keyword was for each month.

There’s been news floating around that YouTube is allowing people to upload longer videos and will eventually remove the time limit altogether.

But I don’t really care about the time limits.

Use YouTube to get traffic

I use YouTube as a method of getting traffic to my website and I know that short videos (3 minutes or less) work the best at getting people’s attention and keeping their attention while you explain one key principle or interesting idea.

At the end of my videos I display an image with my site and URL. Below is a copy of the image that I use:

If people don’t make it to the end of the video they never see the image and I get less traffic. So it’s in my best interest to keep my videos short and to the point.

So you can see why I don’t really care about YouTube raising the time limits from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. It just doesn’t matter to me.

But which distribution service should you use? i.e. YouTube, Viddler, Vimeo, etc. There are pros and cons to each service.
